Originally founded in Boston in 1998, City Year now operates in 24 locations in the US and in Johannesburg, South Africa. City Year was able to come to London in 2010 and will be launching in Birmingham this autumn thanks to the support of a wide cross-section of the business community, with supporters including: The Private Equity Foundation, TowerBrook, Credit Suisse, Barclays, National Grid, Goldman Sachs Gives and Deutsche Bank.
City Year is a leading youth and education charity. We believe that young people can change the world, so we recruit passionate and talented 18-25 year olds for a year of community action.
We serve in schools in deprived communities, acting as tutors, mentors and role models. During the academic year 2013/14 more than 150 volunteers - known as corps members - will serve in schools in some of the most disadvantaged parts of London and Birmingham.
We are the only youth movement that delivers classroom support, one-to-one tuition, breakfast and after-school activities - all rolled into one. We also have a Civic Engagement Team which transforms playgrounds, parks and community facilities.
City Year aims to break the cycle of under aspiration and under achievement among children and young people.
