#7. Buzzwords. Buzzwords Everywhere.
People in business absolutely love buzzwords.
Seriously, they can't get enough of them. But how can they help you get the ideal job, that perfect apprenticeship or the sponsored degree of your dreams? With a little bit of modification they'll get you up and running in job search in no time at all. Often your search will start with you blankly looking at job specifications. No idea what a job spec is? Check out any of the hundreds of opportunities on our site and you'll get idea of what we're on about. But there you are. Going through dozens of adverts. Thinking " what do I actually want to do?" To get yourself started why not think of five words (or phrases) that would describe your ideal job and then search using them. As you start bringing up results you can refine your search, finding words or phrases in the adverts you're reading that define your requirements in a more work related manner or that directly relate to the skills you'll need. Say, for example you really enjoyed planning and putting together all the posters for the Leaver's Ball at your school. So your first search looks something like this: Planning Design Drawing Creative Photography Then after looking at a few adverts you've discover a few of the tools and skills that those sort of roles require. Tools you know how to use and skills you have. So your next search looks like: Design Photoshop Illustrator Marketing Creative By now you're starting to see roles that consistently look interesting to you. Perhaps with a few tweaks you're finding what career could suit you. You'll even get a good idea of the job titles you should be looking for.
It's all pretty simple stuff but it's a great way to get you started when you really have no idea what you're looking for. Further down the line you can use your modified buzzwords to find what skills you need to be improving and what new tools you need to be learning. As you go through a number of adverts you'll start to see things pop up over and again. These will point you in the right direction. Say, for example, you haven't used Photoshop before but all the roles you're interested in require it….
Well. You'd better get learning! Next Week: #8 Work Experience - Get it before you need it.
