Job Description

At MLL Telecom, we have an exciting opportunity for a Wireless Communication Rigger Apprentice to gain invaluable experience with a leading telecommunication company. This role will provide you with the skills, training and competency that a rigging engineer is expected to acquire.

Responsibilities

At MLL Telecom, we have an exciting opportunity for a Wireless Communication Rigger Apprentice to gain invaluable experience with a leading telecommunication company. This role will provide you with the skills, training, and competency that a rigging engineer is expected to acquire.

Expected Duties:

  • Climb Structures to Install and maintain 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G Networks
  • Decommissioning and installation of Telecoms equipment 
  • To support other team members in order to meet deadlines
  • Working on varying sites including rooftops
  • Completion of work to a high standard
  • Use of varying equipment such as winches and braking systems
  • Basic testing
  • Adhering to strict Health and Safety procedures
  • Completion of all rigging activities on site, including installation of RRU, Feeders, Antenna’s, MHAs, and all other associated equipment.

The apprenticeship standard is supported with regular training placements and weekly onsite attendance at our Silverstone office.  Following the completion of this apprenticeship you will be considered for permanent opportunities within our national field-based team.

Reality Check

Important role information:

  • Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years to meet our motor insurance standards and hold a full clean, driving licence (due to the nature of the role)
  • This role will be based in the field working outside in all weather and on remote locations

Qualifications Required

  • It is desirable that you have attained GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and maths (please note if you don’t have this – you will be required to completed these additional skills as part of your apprenticeship)

Training Provided

This apprenticeship will cover the Level 2 Wireless Communication Rigger standard which is divided into the following elements:

Health, Safety & Environment:

  • Current industry health, safety, and environmental legislation such as The Working at Height Regulations (2005), and company-specific requirements for safe working practices
  • Hazards of exposure to radio-frequency energy and the associated safe working practices and relevant legislation such as The Control of Electromagnetic Fields at Work regulations 2016
  • Personal site safety responsibilities, hazards, risks, and control measures
  • The methods and procedures for recording, reporting, and dealing with hazards and risks and the necessary control measures required
  • The hierarchy of risk
  • Responding to problems and emergencies in the workplace and providing suitable solutions
  • The inspection and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment and the procedures to follow when detecting defects or damage

Technical Skills (antenna installation):

  • The Radio Frequency spectrum including current and future technologies and the main difference between frequencies within the full radio spectrum
  • The key components of a wireless telecom site and their functions
  • The types, sizes, and weights of key site components such as Antennas, Amplifiers, and duplexing units
  • The correct network installation and Network Operators’ testing requirements
  • The tools and equipment used in to install, maintain, and decommission sites
  • Site schematic drawings and radio design scopes
  • Radio Frequency monitoring equipment functions and working parameters

Rigging and Working at Height:

  • Structure integrity and the importance of permanent attachment whilst working at height
  • The safe access, egress, and rescue plans for working at height
  • The hazards and risks associated with working at height - including the work environment
  • The loads and forces that are applied when rigging and how to estimate them
  • Permissible loads on structures
  • Slings, knots, and other attachment techniques for the safe lifting and lowering of materials and equipment to height

Communication & Team working:

  • The importance of effective communication
  • The need for positive working relationships
  • Verbal and non-verbal signs and signals

The apprenticeship standard is supported with regular training placements and weekly onsite attendance at our Silverstone office.
