How this role fits in:
Leonardo’s four-year Technical Apprenticeship provides a wealth of hands-on learning and development opportunities. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering design lifecycle by deploying the methods of designing electrical and mechanical systems.
You will undertake a series of rotational placements in the methods of developing electrical and mechanical systems – covering Systems, Mechanical, Hardware and Software Engineering – to give you a flavour of all aspects of engineering design.
These will include learning the methods of developing electrical and mechanical systems, designing mechanical components and assemblies using CAD, and being in a laboratory to test and develop cutting-edge PCB assemblies.
You will be working within cutting-edge facilities and there may be opportunities for travel between the company’s UK sites to meet with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.

Key responsibility areas:
Years 1 and 2:
During your first year you will spend time at college completing a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the foundation qualification of your apprenticeship. Upon completion, you will return to Leonardo to start your three-month rotational placements, while keeping a log of all the work you complete which will then be used towards your apprenticeship.
During your second year you will attend college on a day release basis to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the knowledge qualification of your apprenticeship and continue with your rotational placements.
Years 3 and 4:
In your 3rd year you will get more involved in specific projects and become a key member of the team/departments you are rotating through. Your 3rd year will also see you through the workplace assessment phase of your apprenticeship by completing level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship.
For your final year, you will be selected through a combination of interview and academic/vocational progress to focus your development on a final work placement that lasts for the remainder of the apprenticeship
Commit to the successful completion of all your academic modules and assignments in support of the Apprenticeship standard (Ref: ST0457).

You must have (as a minimum) the following academic qualifications:
5 GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) (e.g., Functional Skills Level 2), to include English Language, maths, and a science.
Level 3 Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard, Technical Support Pathway, which includes:
- Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
- Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Technical Support
