Job Description

AQA are recruiting for Software Development Apprentices to join their office in Milton Keynes! As a Software Developer apprentice, you’ll be part of a growing team responsible for developing high tech systems, for use within the digital cloud, that help to deliver exams within schools across the UK and abroad.

Responsibilities

What will the apprentice be doing?

This is a Hybrid opportunity, with up to 3 days a week working from home.

What will the role involve?

In this role, you’ll spend a lot of your time developing applications, testing code and maintaining DevOps project tasks. You’ll practically live and breathe computers and tech, working as part of a great team and getting first-hand experience of the design of tech systems. Software Engineer Apprentices will also need to actively participate in any update and status meetings, including the various software programme meetings, when necessary.

At AQA, learning is at the heart of everything they do. Their mission is to provide the time, opportunity, and resources to help their people to learn and grow right from the start! You’ll be expected to get to grips with new software and technology to identify ways that tech can be used to evolve and innovate their products. AQA are looking for candidates with great ideas and initiative that love to learn and discover new things every day.

Activities:

  • Developing applications, including Cloud based application development, using specialist software.
  • Regularly updating documents to help with the design, development and delivery of your software solutions.
  • Unit and system testing code to make sure everything is working correctly.
  • Daily maintenance of DevOps project tasks, including estimating how much work has been completed and how much there is left to do.

Who will I be working with?

As a Software Engineer Apprentice with AQA, you’ll report to the Head of Research and Development and work in all areas of technology from design to testing. In this role, you’ll work through different business areas, depending on what your project is, so you’ll be getting great first-hand insight and understanding of how different areas contribute to the overall design of tech systems.

What’s in it for you?

AQA offers an amazing range of benefits including:

  • Up to 34 days’ annual leave
  • Office closure at Christmas and New Year
  • Hybrid working up to 3 days a week
  • Free access to the Headspace app
  • Defined pension contribution of up to 18.5%
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Premium employee assistance programme
  • Maternity, paternity, and adoption schemes
    Plus, many more!

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will study for a Level 4 Software Developer qualification over this 24-month apprenticeship. You will spend 80% of your time learning on the job, and 20% working towards your apprenticeship.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

AQA are also committed to continuing your development. As you go through your apprenticeship, you will be encouraged to talk about your future with AQA and all future progression will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This could mean further apprenticeship opportunities or qualifications to broaden your knowledge and skill set, or opportunities to move into a permanent role within the business upon successful completion of your apprenticeship.
