Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to join our friendly team and start a career in the NHS. We are looking for someone who is keen to learn, willing to work hard and enjoys working in an environment where there is never a dull moment!


The successful candidate will offer general assistance to the Reception and Administration teams and Practice Manager undertaking a variety of duties to assist in the smooth running of the practice.

  • Project a positive and friendly image to patients and visitors either in person or via the telephone
  • Greet patients in a pleasant and courteous manner being aware of and sensitive to anxieties associated with a telephone call/ visit to the doctor
  • Make new and follow-up appointments with the appropriate member of staff and enter them onto the computer
  • Deal with messages, requests and enquiries efficiently ensuring they are logged on the computer accurately and relevant colleagues informed appropriately
  • Enter requests for urgent appointments and home visits to the Doctors for triage, ensuring careful recording of all relevant details
  • Monitor flow of patients into the consulting and treatment rooms, keeping patients informed if surgeries are running behind
  • Ensure specimens are stored safely until collection, and then sent to the laboratory at the first possible opportunity
  • Advise patients of relevant charges for private (Non-NHS) services, accept payment and issue receipts
  • Ensure that all new patients are registered onto the computer system promptly and accurately
  • To be responsible for the daily processing of mail received by the practice
  • Assist in scanning of documents into patient records
  • Assist in processing electronic letters received from hospital and distributing electronic copy to appropriate clinical and non-clinical staff for action/coding
  • Enter patient information on to the computer as required and update information including email addresses and mobile numbers, ensuring the system is correct and up-to-date
  • Retrieve and re-file patient records as required
  • Be responsible for checking stock in clinical rooms to ensure all items are available and in date
  • Undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post as requested by the GP Partners or the Practice Management Team


Future Prospects

There are a wide range of opportunities with GP surgeries and the wider NHS both. Non-clinical career paths include reception/operational management, medical administration and practice management. Clinical career paths are possible from a Phlebotomist (some who takes blood) and Health Care Assistant to an Advanced Practitioner and beyond.

Reality Check

  • Working week - Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00am to 6:30pm

  • 5 x GCSEs at A*-C/ 9-4 including maths and English (or equivalent)
