Job Description

Mechanical Engineering at Specialty Steels involves multi mechanical disciplines which range from mechanical fitting to mechanical maintenance, preventative maintenance to rapid response for breakdowns and working site service support teams to being part of a specialised department engineering team.


A Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship at Speciality Steels involves multi mechanical disciplines which range from mechanical fitting to mechanical maintenance, preventative maintenance to rapid response for breakdowns and site service support to being part of a specialised engineering team. You will work within the Speciality Steels business, which produces high performance alloy and stainless steels designed to meet the detailed and demanding requirements of some of the world’s most challenging markets and industries. The engineering function is very diverse and apprentices within their first 3 years will gain opportunities to visit the different areas and experience the function of the team in each particular area. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to study mechanical engineering in a practical and hands on environment at a Nationally award winning apprenticeship employer in the Sheffield and Rotherham area.

Engineering Apprenticeship Programme Overview:

Your apprenticeship at Stocksbridge, Rotherham or Brinsworth, will include time at college and a training programme that guarantees variety and hands on work. It’s an ideal blend of classroom and ‘on-the-job’ training. The Apprenticeship Programme lasts three years, however this is reviewed every 12 months.

Apprentice attachments will rotate every 3 months and apprentices will find themselves at all three South Yorkshire sites at some point within year 2 and 3. The first 9-10 months will be based at Stocksbridge, with rotations thereafter. Please be aware no positions are specific to just one location until substantive positions are offered and most roles require shift work/weekend working.
Once you have completed the 3 years you will gain an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Certificate Level 3 qualification. Following this you will look to move to a permanent position within Speciality Steels and your 4th year will see you transition into this role.

Programme Summary

Year 1
In your first year you will:

  • Complete modules towards Mechanical maintenance and the first year of your BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Undertake specialist engineering training programme at our on-site training centre at Stocksbridge

Year 2
During your second year you will:

  • Undertake on-site working alongside qualified Craftspeople and Technicians
  • Complete a BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering
  • Continue to complete your competence portfolio while gaining on job experience

Year 3
Your third year will see you:

  • Working on‐site with qualified Craftspeople and Technicians
  • Complete an end point assessment
  • Work towards achieving an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Certificate Level 3, which marks the end of the formal apprentice scheme

In addition to your training you will complete a number of placements in different departments where you will learn all about mechanical engineering. As you move around, you'll gain lots of hands on, practical experience, get the chance to work with different people, discover how the company works and the many career paths available to you. You will be required to travel to our different sites so that you gain maximum exposure and you may be required to work shifts. You can expect to start your career as a team member in a specific department. After that the next step would be to become a Craft Team Member, then onto a Team Leader. After that, there are numerous career paths that you could follow. You could become a Maintenance Technician, Engineer and Senior Engineer. Alternatively you might aim to be a Plant Engineer, Works Engineer and Director of Engineering. Alternatively, you might choose to move around different specialisms ‐ from production planning to safety.

In addition to your training, you will also receive a salary that increases annually.

The current rates for our engineering apprenticeships are:
Year 1 - £9,995
Year 2 - £12000*
Year 3 - £14,700

If requested to work shifts you will receive an additional premium on top of these rates.

*Individuals aged over 21 years going into year 2 will be paid at 3rd year rate or NMW depending on age.

Future Prospects

What future prospects are there for the candidate once the Apprenticeship they have applied for has finished/completed (including salary)?

  • Many of our apprentices complete the level 3 standards, they often continue to progress to a higher apprenticeship at level 4/5
  • All apprenticeships are 3 years in duration, which gives sufficient time for the individuals to complete the standards and find a substantive position

Reality Check

Individuals need to be prepared to travel to the three sites and work shifts when required. Applicants must be aware that the role is with a steel works and as such the majority of areas involve high and low temperatures due to the nature of the business.

These roles will eventually require the apprentices to work shifts and weekends as required and in the first three years you will be asked to work at the three South Yorkshire sites, so need to be willing to travel to each of the sites.

Qualifications Required

Five GCSE’s at level C+/5 or above including English, Maths, Science (or equivalent).

Training Provided

Level 3 Maintenance Operations and Engineering Technician Standard.

All apprentices are classed as trainees for their first three years. During the three years’ time will be made available for the individuals to complete the work from their relevant framework including day release and time off the job.

Apprentices will a BTEC diploma at level 3 in Mechanical manufacturing engineering as part of their advanced apprenticeship.
