Our Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (Technical) Programme caters for those who are interested in the theoretical side of engineering - planning, scheduling, design, development and test elements of mechanical engineering. Over the 4-year programme, you will be trained to become a Mechanical Technician.

Leonardo’s four-year Mechanical Technical Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities. By the end of the scheme, apprentices will have completed a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, a Level 3 Vocational Qualification as well as an HNC in Aeronautical Engineering.

Apprentices follow a structured placement programme designed to ensure broad experience is gained in the required competences. Apprentices work with skilled individuals in each work placement to learn the required skills, knowledge and behaviour. 

Role description:

The apprenticeship will start with an Induction into Leonardo, followed by an apprenticeship team building event at an offsite location (incorporating all 2021 apprenticeship starts). There will also be a Yeovil College Induction to ensure that apprenticeship requirements and expectations are fully established.

Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability and develop your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is manufacturing & supply chain.

The structure of the apprenticeship programme will be as follows:

  • Year 1: Full time at Yeovil College with the possibility of working on-site in your placement at Leonardo Helicopters for 1 day a week post-Christmas
  • During years 2, 3 & 4, apprentices will follow a structured placement programme designed to ensure broad practical experience is gained in the required competences

Each apprentice on this route will need to complete an End Point Assessment as defined in the apprenticeship standard, this will take place in the final months of the programme.

Key responsibility areas:

Apprentices will work towards becoming a technician on completion of their apprenticeship. Post-apprenticeship, there are possibilities to progress through the grading structure and adopt additional responsibilities. 

Throughout the apprenticeship, apprentices will be placed in some or all of the following departmental areas:

  • Structural Design - Apprentices will be involved in aircraft 3D & 2D production design work, carry out changes to production drawings and investigation work leading to design proposals and solutions. They will also be tasked with investigating specific customer requirements and change requests to aircraft designs. Dependent on capability, the apprentice may undertake some stress analysis work
  • Continuous Improvement - Apprentices will learn and be expected to understand, evaluate and identify potential improvements within the business and look at the lean improvements that can be made in various departments
  • Rotor & Transmission Design - Apprentices will produce 2D mechanical detailed drawings of assemblies. There are also opportunities to produce detailed models of components
  • Materials Laboratory - Apprentices will undertake inspection, investigation and testing of manufactured products from a materials perspective. This will involve microscope inspections, hardness and tensile testing
  • Structural Mechanical Test and Evaluation - Apprentices will be involved with the designing of test equipment, calibration of test equipment and running test boards to test aircraft components
  • Manufacturing Engineering - Apprentices will work closely with the aircraft production line, producing the mechanical work instructions for the manufacture of aircraft on the build lines. Apprentices will also create work instructions for mechanical modifications to be fitted or changed on the build lines
  • Customer Support and Training -  Apprentices will gain knowledge of how Leonardo Helicopters supports the customer once the aircraft are in-service. This can range from carrying out amendments to mechanical servicing and repair schedules for the customer, investigating customer queries and offering technical advice to designing specific Ground Servicing Equipment to suit customer needs

Qualifications Required

  • GCSE maths at a minimum of a B/6 or equivalent
  • 4 additional GCSEs (or equivalent) at a minimum of a C/4 (English and Science), along with an interest in practical engineering. These grades are non-negotiable
  • We also welcome applications from individuals who have attained or are on track to attain A Levels/relevant BTEC qualification*

*Note – The Leonardo course is based on an ‘Apprenticeship Standard’ and therefore contains new academic qualifications. This could mean that there may be some duplication in course content.

Training Provided

  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, a Level 3 Vocational Qualification as well as an HNC in Aeronautical Engineering
