Leonardo’s four-year Technical Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities. Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability and develop your academic and practical understanding of the engineering life cycle.

You will undertake a series of rotational placements to gain an understanding of the product lifecycle, from concept through design into manufacturing, understanding the requirements and challenges of turning a design into reality. In particular, you will recognise the impact of design decisions on the manufacturability of a product, how this is influenced and the processes, techniques and tools used to develop the manufacturing and test facilities.

Your placement will give you a flavour of what is involved in:

  • Systems, Mechanical
  • Hardware engineering
  • Manufacturing function

Duties include:

  • Learning how to use CAD, computer modelling and analysis tools to develop effective and efficient manufacturing and test capabilities.

You will be working within cutting-edge facilities and there may be opportunities for travel between the company's UK sites to meet with colleagues, customers and suppliers

Key responsibility areas:

Years 1 and 2:

During your first year, you will spend most of your time at college completing a Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the foundation qualification of your apprenticeship. Upon completion, you will return to Leonardo to start your three-month rotational placements, while keeping a log of all the work you complete which will then be used towards your apprenticeship. During your second year, you will attend college on a day release basis to complete a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the knowledge qualification of your apprenticeship and continue with your rotational placements.

Years 3 and 4:

In your 3rd year, you will get more involved in specific projects and become a key member of the team/departments you are rotating through. Your 3rd year will also see you through the workplace assessment phase of your apprenticeship by completing level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering, the competence qualification of your apprenticeship. For your final year, you will be selected through a combination of interview and academic/vocational progress to focus your development in a final work placement in Manufacturing Engineering, with opportunities for developing innovative assembly solutions to support the introduction of new products.
