Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the proactive monitoring, maintenance, patching, administration and backup of the Technology Centre’s Public, Hybrid and Private Cloud solutions (excluding networking).

Main role: 

  • Proactive infrastructure monitoring and backup supervision across all customer estates
  • Proactive maintenance of all Public, Hybrid and Private Cloud Civica solutions, across all customer estates, post-implementation
  • Update Software Image builds in line with customer solutions and ensure patching is up to date on new builds
  • Vulnerability management across all internal and customer estates including management of security toolsets
  • Assist with planning and execution of internal and customer facing DR tests, including identifying and reporting any updates required to the DR plans and documentation
  • Follow approved procedures regarding change control and documentation standards
  • Support colleagues in the Service Centre teams to make sure that reported issues are resolved within SLA’s
  • Liaise with Civica business units and 3rd parties to ensure a seamless resolution, as required
  • Produce regular capacity reports and highlight any potential service impacting results
  • Eventual Progression into providing out of hours (weekend and evening) support via home VPN on a rota basis, and maintenance activities on a volunteer basis 

Future Prospects

There may be opportunities to undertake further apprenticeship training as many of our programs offer on-going development tracks or gain permanent employment.

Skills Required

  • Good understanding of Windows Server based systems including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, RDS, WSUS
  • Understanding of virtualisation principles and technologies such as VMware / Hyper-V
  • Understanding of backup principles and methodology
  • Basic understanding of networking principles (IPv4 stack)
  • Excellent customer facing skills and a desire to deliver correctly first time
  • Able to clear Security Clearance (SC or above)

Experience of using:

  • Azure Administration and development toolsets
  • Office 365
  • Scripting (i.e. PowerShell)
  • Citrix / VDI
  • Linux
  • Exposure and basic working knowledge supporting LANs/WLANs built around Cisco hardware
  • Good working knowledge of ITIL

Qualities Required

Exposure to the support and maintenance of some of the following technologies: 

  • Public Cloud platforms (i.e. Azure)
  • Windows Server based systems including DNS, DHCP, RDS, WSUS
  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft Application Servers (i.e. Exchange, Skype for Business, SharePoint, SQL Server)

  • Backup / Disaster recovery technologies / methodologies
  • Antivirus / Anti-Malware / Vulnerability toolsets
  • Networking principles
  • Excellent customer facing skills and a desire to deliver correctly first time.

Qualifications Required

  • A Levels in ICT/Computing
  • Or a Level 3 Apprenticeship in a similar subject
  • Or and International Baccalaureate at Level 3 in ICT
  • Or a BTEC Extended Diploma in IT (180 credits)
  • Learners must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in a similar subject
  • Wanting to complete the BCS Level 4 Network Engineer
  • Microsoft professional certifications desirable
  • AZ-900 or AZ-103 certifications

Training Provided

During the programme apprentices are required to spend 20% of time at work on off-the-job learning.

Our programme helps people easily fit their learning around their day job with access to our online learning platform – learning can be accessed anytime, anywhere and on any device so you get high-quality content on the go.

The modules in our Network Engineer Level 4 apprenticeship introduce more advanced technical skills, developing knowledge to a higher level. Our face-to-face training workshops and online learning develops the core set of skills they must be able to do well to be competent in their role. There are approx. 25 classroom training days split on a block release basis over the duration of the apprenticeship. This is an 18 month programme with the final 3 months reserved for end point assessment.

As part of their programme apprentice’s will complete:

  • Five knowledge modules teaching advanced theory and practical applications, through a combination of online learning and practical classroom workshops
  • A work-based portfolio showcasing how the learner has demonstrated the skills they’ve learned in real work projects
  • A synoptic project where the learner will take a business and technical brief in order to build a finished product
  • An end-point assessment interview carried out by BCS – The Chartered Institute for IT – to assess whether the learner has successfully met the learning requirements of the programme
