Job Description

The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning. As a PE specialist the role will focus on promoting health and wellbeing across the school and supporting the teacher to deliver Physical Education.


The Teaching Assistant role with a PE Focus involves:

  • You will gain invaluable insight and experience of working within a classroom setting and will develop the Knowledge, skills, and behaviours to become a Teaching Assistant
  • Working within a school setting and supporting the delivery of Physical Education, Physical Activity, health and well-being and school sport
  • The wider community role involves working within the local PE and school sports network to deliver competition for all the schools within the area
  • Inspiring Healthy, Active Lifestyles and extending opportunities for pupils
  • It is an interesting, varied position that gives the valuable opportunities of gaining experience in working with young people, colleagues, and key community partners in sport
  • You will find out about the sporting career and teaching paths that are available and the hope would be that this apprenticeship will lead you onto your next step on the career ladder

Qualifications Required

  • GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) in English & maths are an advantage but not a requirement for the apprenticeship
  • If none of the above have been achieved the applicant must understand that to achieve the TA Apprenticeship standard both a Functional Skills Level 2 in both English and maths is required to be achieved by Gateway

Training Provided

Training is provided through a blended programme of practical activity, group training and virtual learning. The programme provides opportunities to share good practice with other apprentices and learn from experienced professionals.  

Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship Standard includes topics such as:

  • Understanding how children learn and develop
  • Using technology to support learning
  • Working with teachers to understand and support assessment
  • Keeping children safe in education
  • Develop strategies for support
  • Planning and leading

Additional qualifications include:

  • Safeguarding Level 1
  • Prevent duty
  • Working towards Level 2 Functional Skills (where appropriate)
