Job Description

An exciting opportunity for an Accounts Apprentice at a busy and well-established accountancy firm in Fareham. The role will include basic accounts administration duties including basic bookkeeping, preparation of accounts, tax returns and VAT returns.

Responsibilities

Due to the way we are set up and work the Accounts Apprentice role involves more than just preparing accounts. Actually, preparing accounts will be one of the last things you learn and will not be in the immediate future as you will need to fully understand all the other steps first. You will however have a lot of client contact and will have opportunity to learn about our process and provide important support to the accounts department.

Accounts Production:

Accounts production is the core of what we do. It can be defined as the delivery of the following services:

  • Accounts
  • Bookkeeping
  • VAT
  • Payroll
  • CIS
  • Tax Return
  • Other services requested

Accounts administration tasks:

  • Sending Draft Account Presentations to clients
  • Communicating with the client to seek approval of their draft/final accounts, VAT returns or tax returns and feeding back to the accounts any issues or amendments the client may require
  • Updating internal management software and client records to record the current status of jobs
  • Setting new clients up on our systems, checking we have all the information we require from the client and requesting any data this is missing. This will also involve requesting HM Revenue and Customs authorisations and monitoring their acceptance
  • Any other tasks requested by the Accountants to help them complete their work

Client Communications:

  • Processing and scanning the client data received to allow the relevant department to access it and complete the work required
  • Contacting the clients to request any data identified at section 2 above
  • Updating internal management software and client records to record the current status of jobs
  • Filing physical client data received in our storeroom

Customer Service:

  • Dealing with incoming telephone calls
  • Reception cover
  • Dealing with outgoing communications requested by colleagues to assist with their work

This could involve:

  • Sending emails
  • Writing/sending Letters
  •  Making telephone calls

The apprentice will have the opportunity to gain huge amounts of on the job experience not often available to apprentice level employees.

Future Prospects

Once the apprenticeship has been completed there are excellent career opportunities within the company with many of their staff starting out as an apprentice are now in management positions. 

Reality Check

The apprenticeship will consist of 4 days a week with the employer and 1 day a week in college to complete the AAT part of the qualification. An assessor will also come out to the workplace every 6 weeks to assist with the completion of the NVQ work. The apprenticeship will last 18 months if completing the Level 2 bolt-on & Level 3 AAT, or 12 months if the Level 2 bolt-on has already been achieved. 

Skills Required

  • The successful applicant will have excellent IT skills and be able to include Microsoft Office Suite
  • Have good organisational skills and be able to prioritise their workload effectively

Qualities Required

  • They will be a dedicated and hardworking employee who is capable of managing their own workload and contributing to the overall goals of their team

Qualifications Required

The entry requirements for the apprenticeship qualification are GCSE or equivalent English and maths with grades A-C/9-4 or the Functional Skills Level 2.
