Responsibilities
We have excellent facilities here, an indoor and an outdoor arena, auto horse walker, 20 loose boxes mostly 12’ x 14’, a grass canter area, grass schooling areas, and about 30 acres of turnout (mostly on clay so not suitable for winter turnout once the ground becomes too wet).
- Mucking out, including pellet bedding very easy to muck out but must be done properly
- Turning out/bringing in one horse at a time ONLY
- Daily tack cleaning
- Tacking up (how to put on a bridle correctly and how to put on a headcollar so that you keep control of the horse and that you do both of these correctly)
- Putting pre-made up feeds into feed bowls in the stables
- Filling hay nets (for lorry only – hay racks in stables)
- Clipping/pulling/plaiting/trimming (plait the horses manes under supervision)
- Bathing (under supervision)
- Rug changing
- There is the opportunity to ride a couple of ‘safe’ horses belonging to one of the clients
- First aid, or to gain first aid qualification
- Exercising horses from the ground (lunging, horse walker, long reining)
- Pasture management
- Yard management
- To learn about correct worming of the horses
