A fantastic opportunity to work for River Cottage at their HQ in Axminster. As a Commis Chef you will work in all areas of the kitchen, farm and restaurant, assisting the River Cottage team in all culinary duties. You will help create the finest dishes Devon has to offer with everything grown and reared onsite or in the local area.


We are currently looking for a passionate Apprentice Chef to join our kitchen team at River Cottage HQ. If you have an ambition to start a career in a professional kitchen, this is an excellent entry level opportunity.

You will be working within a professional kitchen team, helping to create delicious dishes influenced by the seasons using the very best local, responsibly sourced, seasonal ingredients which reflect our passion and commitment to food provenance

Duties will include but are not limited to;

  • Pot washing
  • Cleaning
  • Food preparation
  • Waste management
  • Generally assisting with the day to day running of the kitchen for our events and cookery school

Salary will be discussed at interview stage. 

Future Prospects

Upon successful completion of the Commis Chef Apprenticeship, a full-time position may be available. Furthermore, you may also be considered to progress onto the Chef de Partie Apprenticeship.

Skills Required

  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • Punctual
  • Happy to follow instructions but also think outside the box
  • Comfortable when working alone and as part of a team

Qualities Required

  • Passion for food and cooking
  • General interest in local produce 
  • Excellent hygiene

Qualifications Required

Learners ideally need to have maths and English GCSE at grade C/4 or equivalent.

Training Provided

Apprentices will be working towards achievement of the following

  • Certification of Commis Chef Apprenticeship standard
  •  Level 1 Functional Skills in English and maths (where applicable)
