Job Description

We are very excited to offer the apprenticeship opportunity because the apprenticeship will provide training of calibration of the various types and sizes of viscometers, oil blending, oil calibration, thermometer calibration and bath stability tests.


Poulten Selfe & Lee Limited is a UK based manufacturer of high-quality glass capillary viscometers and a range of automatic viscometer systems sold under the brand name of PSL Rheotek.

The brand is well established in the worldwide market of viscosity measurement. The facilities are in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex where the following functions are accommodated:  Electronics Assembly, R&D, service, glassblowing, and laboratory departments.  The glass viscometer tubes are produced with high precision and the instruments are individually calibrated in the UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. The laboratory also calibrates thermometers and reference oils that are used as viscosity standards.

This is a great opportunity for a young people to develop a career in a very niche scientific industrial environment.

During the normal daily work, the apprentice will be part of the calibration laboratory team. The training will include:

  • Calibration of the various types and sizes of viscometers
  • Oil blending
  • Oil calibration
  • Thermometer calibration
  • Bath stability test

The apprentice will be part of a small friendly team, comprising of two senior calibrators and two apprentices, who are at an advanced stage of their apprenticeship. The team is led by the laboratory manager, who also takes part in the day-to-day work and is responsible for the workplace part of the training.

Over 21 months, you’ll devote 20% of your 40 hours of working time towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at PSL Rheotek who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career. Future Prospects

Demonstration of scientific understanding and good work practices can open opportunities for you to become a senior calibrator in the calibration laboratory, a laboratory supervisor, a laboratory technician in the polymer testing laboratory or a quality assistant.

Qualifications Required

  • Ideally English, Maths and Science GCSE A*-C (9-4) grade or equivalent (however lower grades will be considered, so don’t be put off)

  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
