Job Description

Ardingly College are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic individual who is interested in obtaining qualifications and starting a career as a Science Technician. The post-holder will complete an apprenticeship under the Laboratory Technician standard at Level 3.


Health & Safety:

  • Be familiar and comply with the departmental Health & Safety policy
  • Assist in the completion of termly health and safety checks and report any issues to the appropriate persons, following these items up until corrected
  • Maintain good relations with maintenance staff, particularly the electricians and carpenters. Any broken or damaged fixtures, furniture or fittings should be reported
  • Set out equipment for PAT testing or other inspections when required
  • Be aware of the safety regulations itemised from time to time in the CLEAPPS bulletins; to be aware of the regulations and advice contained in past CLEAPPS bulletins, copies of which are held on the school network
  • Assist in the trialling of all new experiments with relevant teachers prior to use in the classroom to ensure they work and identify any health and safety issues

Requisitions and Laboratory Management:

  • Set out apparatus and equipment as and when requested
  • Preparing chemicals and reagents as and when requested
  • Clear away apparatus and return it to its place of storage unless requested to leave it out by the teacher concerned, in time to provide a safe and tidy working environment for the following class
  • Be available and on hand for the first ten minutes whenever a class is doing practical work in order to cope with unforeseen difficulties
  • Check apparatus returned and advise the teacher concerned if anything is broken or missing
  • Maintain the stationary areas within laboratories, making sure they do not run short
  • Take responsibility for the aesthetic appearance of the laboratories making sure they are clean and tidy, and so best promote the image of the department
  • Help in the formation of displays
  • To help prepare laboratories for open days

Departmental Management:

  • Help to maintain well-organised and tidy preparatory rooms, both in the STEM building and the Prep School science laboratory
  • Help with the preparation of annual budgets supplying costs for materials and equipment
  • Photocopy examinations papers and larger documents as requested by Heads of discipline
  • Establishing good communication with other laboratory technicians and liaise and support them as necessary
  • In the absence of colleagues, help provide support to other areas as needed
  • Contribute to departmental development by attending departmental meetings

Professional Development:

  • Attend termly technician meetings with the Head of Science
  • Attend appropriate INSED in order to develop your skills base
  • Attend Apprentice Technician training programme as outlined in the standard

Future Prospects

Full time position offered upon successful completion of apprenticeship.

This apprentice will be working for 35 weeks of the year.

  • Educated to GCSE level in English, maths and Science with a keen interest in Science


  • A level in Science subject

Training Provided

Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 3 NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)
