Job Description

We have a position available for a IT Degree Technician Apprentice. You will be ensuring that support incidents, questions and requests for change are recorded, you will take action to resolve support requests or escalate to colleagues/3rd line support as appropriate and ensure that customers’ expectations are met or exceeded.

Responsibilities

Main responsibilities: 

  • Monitoring the ticket recording system, emails, and walkie talkie radios for support requests
  • Playing a proactive part in resolving support incidents quickly, efficiently and to a high standard
  • Communicating effectively by telephone, email, in face-to-face discussions, or in online meetings
  • Maintaining a professional, friendly, and positive manner
  • Keeping customers informed about progress
  • Ensuring the customer is satisfied with the resolution

Asset Management

  • You will help to maintain the IT estate, which is primarily based on Hyper -V virtualised Microsoft Servers and Windows 10 clients
  • Help to install new equipment and software using standard tools
  • Configure new equipment and re-purpose existing hardware where necessary
  • Accurately maintain the equipment inventory, including changes in location, user, or department for all equipment
  • Install and configure software on client machines/servers
  • Maintain audio/visual equipment, such as classroom projectors/speakers and interactive panels
  • Work with suppliers to submit warranty claims

Network Maintenance:

We benefit from up to date HP/Aruba network infrastructure, including core and edge switches and wireless access points.

We have physical servers running Hyper -V in both production and disaster recovery and have Veeam backup in operation.

This is a varied role, which includes maintaining this infrastructure and:

  • Troubleshooting printers
  • Resolving user account/password issues
  • Connecting devices to the wireless network
  • Maintain the user database (Active Directory) to ensure it is up to date, accurate and secure
  • Maintain group policies for all school devices and users for optimal, secure computer use
  • Install and configure network switches when required (including both physical mounting and configuring the networking/VLANs on each switch)
  • And much more!

Office 365
Oaklands School currently makes extensive use of Office365 and makes some use of Azure.

  • Configure and maintain shared mailboxes using Exchange Online
  • Ensure the membership and policies for Microsoft Teams are up to date

Other Responsibilities:

There are other services where the IT Support Team assists the school and where members of the Team must keep themselves up to date.

These include:

  • Assist with setting up and operating AV equipment and/or lightning during school events such as the annual School Show or during lettings of school facilities. Some events may take place outside of normal working hours. Overtime is paid for supporting these events
  • Update the school’s WordPress website when required
  • Adhere to school policies and legal obligations (for example, GDPR, child protection and safeguarding legislation)
  • Keep up to date with health and safety procedures, school policies and the staff handbook
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as and when required
  • Monitor safeguarding alerts and forward any issues to the Designated Safeguarding Leads
  • Oaklands School has an excellent standard of IT. It is our aim to ensure that other schools supported by the IT Support Team benefit from a similar standard.
  • This role will assist those schools to progress and provide the advice and friendly encouragement to do so, while providing support for existing systems.

Future Prospects

92% of QA Apprentices secure permanent employment after finishing their apprenticeship. Additionally there may be opportunities to undertake further apprenticeship training as many of our programs offer on-going development tracks.

  • Please note all staff will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS application following the initial offer of employment

Salary:

  • Starting at Support Staff Grade B1 £18,562 per annum
  • Progressing to Grade C £18,933 upon completion of Level 4
  • Further progression to Grade D £21,403 upon completion of Level 5
  • And then Grade E £26,544 when the Degree is completed (this could be advanced forward)

  • QA’s apprenticeships are funded by the Education & Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), an executive agency of the Department for Education
  • To be eligible for a Government funded apprenticeship you must have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for the last 3 consecutive years

Skills Required

Essential:

  • Experienced in troubleshooting Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, and Microsoft Office
  • A good working knowledge of network management
  • Excellent fault finding, diagnostic, organisational and administrative skills
  • Ability to work with other staff as a team
  • A desire for a continual improvement in the IT Support service
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate to people of a wide range of technical and non-technical backgrounds
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Smart appearance and friendly manner
  • Flexibility and a readiness to undertake a wide range of tasks
  • A genuine and demonstratable interest and enthusiasm for working in IT 

Qualities Required

The following would be highly desirable: 

  • Experience of working in an educational establishment
  • High level of literacy/communication skills, capable of producing documentation written to a high, professional standard
  • Experience of supporting other OS (Mac)
  • Experience of supporting Google Classroom
  • Basic TCP/IP networks e.g., setting up a router, Wi-Fi
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Azure Active Directory, Security Centre, and VM Management
  • Experience of scripting, particularly in PowerShell
  • Experience of Microsoft Intune
  • In sympathy with the Catholic ethos of the school, including a commitment to co -operation and helpfulness and a concern for the well -being of others 

Qualifications Required

Entry requirements:

  • Honours degree (2:2 or above) in an appropriate Computing, Technology or Engineering discipline
  • In order to attempt the EPA apprentices must have achieved GCSE maths and English at Grade C/4  – you may still enter the programme but will need to evidence Level 2 Maths and English qualification before starting the gateway and EPA

Non-standard entry:

  • Relevant qualifications and/or work experience will be taken into consideration where the applicant has the judged potential to benefit from the programme. Requests will be considered on an individual basis where appropriate

Informal Interviews:

Informal interviews will be held where:

  • The suitability of a candidate is in doubt and further evidence is sought.
  • The candidate presents an unusual set of qualifications taken or pending, and an appropriate conditional offer needs to be determined.
  • Candidates may need advice on the appropriateness of the programme.

End Point Assessment:

  • You must be able to evidence level 2 English and maths before you start your End Point Assessment. You may still be beginning the programme without these but must obtain the qualifications in order to begin the EPA

Training Provided

Digital and technology solutions professional degree level standard 

Approximately 11% of training takes place in the QA learning centre classroom. 9% is done in the workplace, through online training, face-to-face meetings with your QA Technical Skills Coach, or developing your portfolio. The remaining time will be spent on your workplace activity.
