Job Description

If you want to get a qualification in business administration, but also like action, travel and adventure then becoming a HR Specialist with the British Army could be the perfect solution.

An Army HR job is like no other HR job. As an HR Specialist, you could be attached to any unit and go with them wherever they go. Although you’ll be a soldier, you’ll be fully trained in HR, starting with an advanced apprenticeship in business administration.

You’ll have responsibility from day one and the chance to move up into other roles – Chartered Accountant, for example. With worldwide travel, adventure training and the chance to make friends for life, it’s exciting as well as rewarding.

Duties will include:

  • Serve within any unit of the British Army
  • Make an immediate impact, with real responsibility from day one
  • You'll be managing pay, holidays and allowances for soldiers
  • You'll update critical data on personnel on bespoke HR software
  • Enjoy exceptional prospects for promotion
  • Move into specialist support roles, such as a Chartered Accountant
  • Fantastic travel opportunities: there are Army HR Specialists in every British Embassy around the world

Future Prospects

  • Promotion to Lance Corporal may follow after about 3 years as a Private. As your career progresses, you’ll have the chance to work towards other qualifications that may include a fully funded degree in HR or certifying as a chartered accountant

Skills Required

  • You must have a basic level of fitness and be able to work well in a group
  • Good communication skills

Qualities Required

  • We welcome people into the Army from all backgrounds
  • There is no ‘typical’ Soldier candidate! You don’t need any military experience, just an appetite to take on responsibility and be part of a team

Qualifications Required

  • GCSEs at grades D/3 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English

Training Provided

Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

  • You'll start with your initial military training which will teach you how to be a soldier - this will cover everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle. If you join as a Junior Soldier (under 17 years 5 months), you’ll do a 23-week basic military training course at Harrogate. If you join as a Regular Soldier (over 17 years 1 month), you’ll do the regular 14-week adult basic training
  • You then get 15 weeks’ specialist training at Worthy Down, Winchester to learn about the administration of military personnel and start your apprenticeship. You’re trained to use our information systems and you will also get your Category B Driving licence (car). Later in your career, you will have opportunities to take further recognised qualifications in Business Management and HR. These include apprenticeships and degrees
  • You’ll finish your apprenticeship whilst working with your unit
  • If you have not got English and/or maths GCSE level 4/C, you will be given additional support and training to achieve Functional Skills level 2 in maths and English
