Job Description

A role in Human Resources at TfL is all about the people that keep London moving. Your role will contribute towards ensuring we hire, develop and support the employees at the heart of our business, by making sure the right people, with the right experience and skills, are in the right jobs.

Responsibilities

You'll begin a comprehensive development programme designed to kick start your successful career in HR. A combination of practical, on the job experience and theory will combine to give you an overview of best professional practise, resourcing and talent planning, performance management and employment law.

As an apprentice, your 2 year development programme will be made up of up to five placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1:

In your first year on the scheme, you will complete 3 compulsory placements in the following areas:

HR Services - Customer Delivery

First line response dealing with business queries, gaining an in-depth knowledge of our policies and how things work at TfL.

Employee Communications & Engagement

Develop and deliver high quality, effective internal communications to engage our employees, driving performance. This also provides experience in coaching and giving strategic advice to our senior managers.

Employee Matters

Applying practical employment law knowledge to support our business to manage cases including discipline, grievance, and performance.

Year 2:

HR Strategy

This placement provides the opportunity to specialise in a more technical area of HR, which can include, Talent, Reward, Recruitment, Diversity & Inclusion, Pensions and Employee Relations

HR Business Partner

In the second year, you will complete a placement supporting an HR Business Partner with a range of initiatives including talent and resourcing, change programmes and organisational structure and design.

The order in which these placements take place may vary due to business requirements. We appreciate your flexibility on this.

Future Prospects

You'll gain a CIPD Level 5 in Applied Human Resources and become a CIPD associate member. Through a combination of on-the-job learning and classroom training, you’ll develop the diverse skills and understanding needed for a successful career in HR. This foundation can lead to a role in employee case management, recruitment, learning and development, talent, diversity and inclusion, or business partnering depending on which areas you have developed interests in on the scheme.

Reality Check

You must be 18 years of age by 6th September 2021 or over to be eligible for this scheme due to Health and Safety requirements.

In return for your commitment and expertise, you will enjoy excellent benefits and scope to grow. Rewards vary according to the business area but mostly include:

  • Travel concessions - Oyster card covering zones 1-6 (covering London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, Tramlink and London's bus services displaying a red roundel)
  • 29 days annual leave plus public and bank holidays
