Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity to take your first steps into developing your career within highways construction and maintenance, learning all aspects of highways groundworks, whilst working within a well respected construction engineering company, responsible for helping to create and maintain some of the UK's 248,000 miles of highway network.


What will the apprentice be doing?

This is an excellent opportunity to take your first steps into developing your career as a Highways Groundworker apprentice. This apprenticeship will involve working within highway construction and upgrade.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Ground Works.
  • Kerbings / Edgings.
  • Flagging / Trenching.
  • Drainage works.
  • Ducting.
  • Cable pulling.
  • Concreting.
  • Earthworks.
  • Health & safety.
  • Working considerately and safely around all other road users and local communities.
  • Ensuring all works are completed to the highest quality in line with the design and specification of the project.
  • Completing any necessary paperwork.
  • Attending start of shift team briefings.
  • Supporting senior staff (supervisors / engineers) in the completion of inspection and testing of completed
    works in line with the Inspection Test Plan (ITP.)
  • Setting out and preparing the sub-surfaces.
  • Interpreting plans and drawings.
  • Site clearance.
  • Unloading and storing building materials.
  • Marking out and digging trenches.
  • Working with a banksman.
  • Dumper/digger/360 excavator training & operation.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Training will be delivered in the workplace with regular online sessions and the apprentice will be working towards a Level 2 Groundworker qualification.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

On successful completion of the apprenticeship there will be opportunity to move into full-time employment.

Reality Check

The successful candidate needs to be willing and prepared to undertake outside work in all weather conditions. Offer of employment will be subject to successful passing of Drugs & Alcohol test. Due to location, the apprentice must be able to get themselves to site.
