Job Description

We are a forward-thinking in-house consultancy providing a range of services to the County Council and other public authorities. This includes design, laboratory testing, site supervision and project/contract management from early stages of a project through to supervision of construction.


What will the apprentice be doing?

Role Responsibilities
Technicians provide technical support to Engineers to design, build and manage construction projects on highway networks in Hampshire and for clients elsewhere in the Country. These projects could be for new bypasses, bus priority corridors, motorway/trunk road interchanges or minor changes in alignment to the existing highway network.

  • Geometric Design - use of specialist infrastructure design software to produce 3D design models for use by the design team to produce drawings, schedules, and estimates
  • Drawing Production – producing drawings in AutoCAD to support Engineers preparing contract documents or street lighting layouts.
  • Site Support – to liaise with Engineers and Contractors building the projects to support geometric change when unforeseen issues arise on site requiring the design modification.
  • Customers– communicating with customers/stakeholders via the telephone, letters and email
  • Reports – writing and/or contributing to reports issued to customers/ stakeholders.


Working as a technician within one or more of the County Council’s Engineering Consultancy infrastructure design teams, the key elements of the role will include:

  • Production of 2D/3D design models
  • Production of CAD drawings
  • Supporting the administration of projects
  • Ensuring outputs meet the required standards
  • Meeting agreed deadlines
  • Working as a member of a team
  • Contributing to providing solutions to problems
  • Working both in an office environment and on site.


What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of the role, you will have the opportunity to complete, a BTEC Level 3 Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at Fareham College, alongside further civil and lighting training courses, which upon successful completion would lead to either a Highway Technician or Lighting Technician post.

As part of the Apprenticeship, you will be expected to undertake and complete the following vocational studies:

  • National Vocational Qualification in Civil Engineering for Technicians (Institution of Civil Engineers) at level 3.
  • A Technical Certificate (BTEC level 3) in Construction and the built Environment (Civil Engineering).
  • Functional Skills
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights. This will require you to attend college on a regular basis and complete assignments.
  • Training location: Fareham College.
  • Time commitment: One day a week – paid day release.
  • Travel: All costs of travelling to the training location will be reimbursed.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Once complete, there may be an option to progress onto the Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

Reality Check

Potential hazards on sites include the presence of civil engineering plant, working with live traffic, risk of electrocution, outdoor work, challenging responses from the general public. Suitable PPE equipment will be supplied. You may be required to visit other locations within Hampshire and therefore need to have the ability to travel
