Highway Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship - Intermediate (Level 2)

Responsibilities

What will the apprentice be doing?

Here at Amey, we want you to become the next Highways superstar of tomorrow in one of our 6 Highways Depots; Come wind, rain or shine, you will be working practically and hands-on to maintain, fix and attend emergency callouts across our Kent highways network!

As an Apprentice, every day will be different! One day, you might be working on installing traffic management systems, the next you might be working on minor civil works like kerbing or slabbing!  Your days could include the following:

• Attending a work/project briefing at the start of the day
• Going out with the Highways team completing our routine works which includes.
  • Routine and cyclic maintenance activities
  • Minor civil works – kerbing, slabbing
  • Drainage works
  • Carriageway patching
  • Winter maintenance operations.
  • Working as part your depot team to deliver reactive, emergency and other types of highways works in all weathers
  • Always taking responsibility for the safety of yourself be complying with Health and Safety legislation to protect the members of the public.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

As part of your Apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto a Level 2 in Highways Maintenance qualification. You will be fully supported by our partnered college to achieve this qualification by attending college 1-day per week, having 1-2-1 advice and support, e-learning materials, and a whole team of Highway superstars on hand for advice and technical knowledge at your depot.

You’ll be provided with a “buddy”, to assist you as you settle in. This is the person will be the friendly face when you join our Highways team – the go-to person that you will ask lots of questions to when you start! Once you have settled in, you will be allocated your mentor in the workplace. Your mentor will support you throughout your qualification, help you learn the technical skills and have regular catchups with you to ensure that you are on the way to become our next Highways superstar!

As part of your Apprenticeship, you will have opportunities to gain your NRSWA Street works Operative ticket/qualification, HGV licences, IOSH certification and other relevant plant/machinery qualifications/tickets.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

At the end of your Apprenticeship, you will move into a guaranteed permanent position with Amey, and your development does not stop there! As part of being an employee at Amey, you will be given lots of opportunities to further your development; whether that is by doing a further qualifications which Amey will fund through our Apprenticeship Schemes or progressing further in the business into our Supervisor positions, the choice is yours!
