Higher Apprentice - Substation Engineer - Higher (Level 4)
National Grid own and operate the electricity transmission network in England and Wales and operate (but don’t own), the two high voltage electricity transmission networks in Scotland and have responsibility for the offshore electricity transmission regime.
ETO (Electricity Transmission Owner) delivers a world class day to day operation of our network defined by; excellence in safety, reliability and productivity for our customers. It delivers the work plan to maintain and repair the system in the most cost-effective and safe way and also ensures efficient work delivery to ensure cost efficiency and meet challenges set through external regulatory bodies.
Our transmission systems are made up of approximately 7,200km of overhead lines, approximately 1,400km of underground cable and 335 substations. These all serve to connect sources of electricity generation to the distribution system. Day-to-day operation of the network ensures that demand is fulfilled, meaning we transmit a safe, secure and dependable supply of energy across the country.
About the role
As a Higher Apprentice Engineer, working at your current level of training, you would be ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of the electricity transmission network through the efficient maintenance of substation assets.
Key tasks and areas of work
Whilst on programme, Higher Apprentice Substation Engineers can typically expect to:
- Shadow experienced craftsperson’s and engineers in site work
- Interpret engineering drawings
- Experience major outages and faults including
- Transformer and Circuit breaker maintenances
- Involvement in planning of outages
- Shadowing experienced protection engineers
- Pass safety authorisation to become Competent Persons
- Undertake Authorised Persons and Senior Authorised Persons training and site based homework
- Outage planning
The Higher Apprentice Engineer programme has been designed specifically to develop new apprentices into site based supervisor roles within Electricity Transmission Owner delivery. These are based within a number of National Grid substation sites around the UK.
The programme is 36 months in duration and features a blended learning approach including;
- On job experiences - structured specifically by the team leader and mentor. This may involve shadowing and delivering day to day work activities. The log book aims to structure and reflect on this learning
- Academy specialist training (Eakring, Nottinghamshire) - National Grid Academy technical, safety and professional training modules delivered by qualified delivery staff. These modules are a selection of business specific and general training modules

A keen interest in National Grid and the role you are applying for.
You will need to have a GCSE in English Language* at Grade C or above (or equivalent) with one of the following:
- 2 A Levels A* - C (1 must be in either Maths OR Physics)
- BTEC National Certificate Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Engineering Grade Merit or Distinction (Essential the Maths modules should be at Merit or Distinction)
- BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or Engineering Grade Merit or Distinction (Essential the Maths modules should be at Merit or Distinction)
- ONC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Grade Merit or Distinction (Essential the Maths modules should be at Merit or Distinction)
- HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering Grade Pass, Merit or Distinction
- Degree in Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering discipline

Level 4 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Manufacture plus Functional Skills (if required).
Induction – which includes team building, safety and personal development activities.
Off-the-job training - at our training centres where you’ll work with state-of-the-art equipment in workshops.
