Job Description

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our Engineering Service team. This opportunity is unique and unlike other Apprenticeship vacancies. The training you will receive is front-loaded into the first 20 weeks of the course, where you receive practical training and support in a custom-built training facility


What will the apprentice be doing?

  • Clear and tidy the construction site
  • Dig trenches for foundations
  • Set up sites including putting up barriers, safety signs and huts
  • Provide evacuation support
  • Interpreting the use of drawings and specifications
  • Laying pavements, kerbs and driveways
  • Removing drainage and pipework systems
  • Operating plant machinery, such as excavators and dumper trucks
  • Preparing the ground/ foundations to allow construction to begin
  • Redirecting waterways and connecting pipes with existing pipework


As a new starter on our groundworks training programme you will begin on a 8 week paid traineeship, where you will attend the training centre for 4 weeks and work on-site for the remaining 3.


Following success in this period you will move on the Groundworks Level 2 apprenticeship programme at Fareham Colleges CETC campus.

Qualification/s to be obtained:

Level 2 Groundworks


Written and spoken English

As part of the programme you will be required to achieve your Functional skills in English and Maths.

Delivery method:
• The training will be delivered by Fareham College, an Ofsted Outstanding College. Your training will be delivered Block Release, and you will attend Fareham Colleges; CETC campus. The schedule of this block release is to be confirmed.

Reality Check

The successful candidate will have a willingness to learn and be physically able to undertake manual work outside, sometimes in inclement weather. You will have a keen interest in the Construction industry, be hardworking, reliable and have a pro-active approach to work. You will have Maths and English GCSEs at grade 9-3 (A*-D) or Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and English. Candidates who do not have these qualifications will need to complete and pass an initial Maths and English assessment. Preference will be given to someone who lives, works, or has studied in the New Forest District.
