Job Description

To support the delivery of a clean and attractive campus by working as part of the grounds team. You will assist with the maintenance and development of the Group’s green spaces and public realm .You will also study for and complete a recognised. Horticultural course and work based assessments.


 As a Horticulture Apprentice you will have the opportunity to get involved in everything from amenity horticulture (i.e. the care of turf, parks, gardens and other green spaces) maintenance of sporting surfaces, through to cultivation of plants including:

  • Participate in the maintenance of the Group’s green spaces and public realm areas
  • Complete an appropriate horticultural course of study and work-based assessments successfully
  • Develop skills in the maintenance and safe operation of horticultural and public realm equipment and machinery
  • Participate in the full range of year-round cyclical grounds maintenance, sport, landscape development and public realm operations
  • Planting, pruning and weeding operations
  • Safe use and maintenance of hand-held petrol driven tools
  • Use and maintenance of a range of ride on machinery
  • A full range of planned maintenance tasks
  • Other such duties within the scope and spirit of the job title, purpose, and its grading

To secure permanent position on completion of the apprenticeship.

  • Able to work flexibly to meet the service and Group needs
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to travel to and work at various Group sites within Coventry and to College
  • Full UK or European equivalent driving licence, to drive Group owned vehicles
  • As an apprentice you can apply for an NUS Apprentice extra card which can be used at hundreds of high street and online brands.

  • Ability to prioritise. Ability to learn and adapt to new skills Willing to undertake further education at college (Level 2 in Horticulture) and committed to complete full term of apprenticeship

  • Desire to make horticulture a career
  • Completing tasks as instructed
  • Experience of operating IT based systems

  • Being enthusiastic self-motivated and wanting to learn

Qualifications Required

  • GCSE grade C/4 or above in English and maths (or equivalent)
  • (If you do not already meet these criteria, we will ask you to sit initial assessments to indicate which level you are currently working at)

Training Provided

Intermediate Groundworker Standard.

  • Day/Block release to Brooksby Campus (part of SMB Group)
  • Functional skills if necessary
  • On-the-job training
  • Off-the-job training
