Job Description

General Management is at the heart of everything we do and every decision we make. This scheme will be your gateway to a position of real seniority, and the variety of experiences to understand the area of the business that inspires you the most.


You’ll gain experience across a range of different projects in London Underground and Surface Transport providing opportunities for challenges, growth and development. You could find yourself working behind a desk gathering and analysing data that will guide multimillion-pound investment decisions, or benchmarking TfL against other metros and operators from around the world to see what we can learn from them and do better here. You could be on the frontline, ensuring the smooth running of a busy station or engaging with key business sponsors such as MPs or London Assembly Members, to explain our proposals and answer their concerns, whilst managing a team of staff and thousands of customers daily.

Year 1 & Year 2 – Structured Rotations:

During your first two years, you will complete a number of core placements. Due to the size and range of opportunities available in our organisation, there are a number of business areas you could find yourself placed into. Below is an example of what this could look like: 

Placement 1 – Strategy & Planning – 6 months

Business planning, writing/reviewing business cases to support strategic goals, transport planning.

Placement 2 – Operations – 6 months:

Serving customers, responding to operational incidents, leading a team of staff, assisting customers with special requirements. Placements will be available across London Underground and Surface Transport’.

Placement 3 – Project Management – 6 months:

Identifying and capturing risk, project reporting against time, cost and quality, stakeholder management.

Placement 4 – Managing Assets:

Assess whole life costs for renewals and enhancements works against business benefits, business case development, asset management.

Year 3 & Year 4 – Flexible Rotations:

You will have the flexibility to tailor your third and fourth year placements to match the areas of the business you are interested in. Your final placement will take place alongside a compulsory research project that will explore a business improvement which could support your dissertation.

Future Prospects

On this exciting and challenging apprenticeship, you will broaden your understanding of management, experience the operational imperatives of the business and enhance the diversity of the management population across TfL that represents the city we serve.

You’ll work towards achieving a degree in Management and Business (BA Hons) and a full chartered membership with CMI (Chartered Management Institute).

You will also receive professional development support to help you make the right next step for you upon successfully completing the scheme. Where possible, we will look to align this with your preferred placement experiences. This could include a role in transport operations or in any of our core business functions.

Reality Check

You must be 18 years of age by 6th September 2021 or over to be eligible for this scheme due to Health and Safety requirements.

Qualities Required

We’re looking for potential in all of our apprentices. We are looking for somebody who can demonstrate our behaviours which are Active, Accountable, Direct, Fair and Consistent and Collaborative.

Qualifications Required

A minimum of 5 GCSE’s Grade A* - C or Grade 4 and above including maths and English language (or equivalents) plus 3 A-Levels in any subject at grade A* - C or equivalent.

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.

Training Provided

Training Provider to be confirmed.

For the duration of the scheme you’ll have a business sponsor that is responsible for the design and delivery of the apprenticeship scheme. They will help secure the right placements for you and support you in your professional development. You’ll also have a buddy, either a previous apprentice or graduate from this scheme. Your buddy can answer any day to day questions you have and share their experiences with you.

During the scheme you’ll not only complete the CMI (Chartered Management Institute) qualification but also have opportunities to complete additional training courses. These will vary from soft skills training to technical skills training. Your sponsors and placement managers will ensure you attend all the relevant training to support you in your role.

We also have an established Graduate and Apprentice Committee as well as an Alumni group, these groups are powerful networks in developing your understanding of the organisation, different apprenticeship schemes and opportunities to develop your career. Many current graduates and apprentices believe this to be a powerful support network and they often hold apprentice only events that are very beneficial to your continued learning.
