Job Description

Our Hospices Grounds Team play a vital role ensuring the general upkeep and the aesthetics of the gardens are always at the best. The Gardener Apprentice will be part of this team ensuring that the visual aspect of the gardens and grounds are in keeping with special requirements of the hospice and are always welcoming and safe.


What will the apprentice be doing?

Principal duties and responsibilities:-

- Assist in the maintenance of both St Barnabas and Chestnut Tree       House lawns, flower beds, trees, and soft & Hard landscaping
- Assist in the maintenance of garden sheds/workshops, all tools and machinery
- To help supervise teams of volunteers and corporate groups on a weekly basis and ensuring guidance and support is adequately provided
- Ensure Health and Safety guidelines are adhered to
Work with external suppliers

- Must have full driving licence due to travelling within the role

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

You will gain a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard award in Horticulture & Landscape Operative (Provider will be Brinsbury college) Apprentice standard: -

Programme duration is 24 months (with block release to college)

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Horticulture or landscape operatives can be employed to work in public parks and gardens, green spaces and historic gardens, private gardens and estates or in production nurseries and retail outlets. Many businesses will be specialised in their activities, such as grounds maintenance (soft-landscape) or landscape construction (hard-landscape). Soft- landscaping includes the establishment and maintenance of plants and cultivated areas. Hard-landscaping includes establishment of hard surfaces and structures in addition to the establishment of plants in cultivated areas.
