Job Description

You will be working alongside our existing staff on a variety of woodland establishment projects, typical jobs in involve strimming, fencing, chemical weeding, tree planting, tree shelter installation, pruning, chainsaw work and tractor driving.


Duties will include:

  • Site preparation, clearing vegetation and redundant fence lines in preparation for tree planting
  • Planting trees manually with a spade and mechanised planting using tractor mounted machine
  • Helping install various types of fencing such as stock, rabbit, deer post and rail together with site furniture such as stiles and gates
  • Help install various different types of tree shelters to protect trees from pests
  • Apply chemical weeding treatments around the base of trees
  • Basic chainsaw work to assist with widening rides and footpaths to maintain access
  • Tree pruning

Full time position as a Forest Operative.

Reality Check

  • You need to be able to get to our premises between 7.30 am and 8.00 am ready to travel to site in our vehicles with a staff member.  You will return to our premises around 5.00 pm
  • Need to be able to bring own substance for the day including food and water
  • Suitable footwear and clothes must be worn, suitable for outdoors working in extreme weather conditions
  • Wage negotiable

Skills Required

  • Practically minded
  • Basic understanding of what is required of a Forest Operative
  • Some basic knowledge of native tree types

Qualities Required

  • The ability to listen and learn
  • Work hard as part of a team as well as on your own
  • Good time keeping
  • Friendly and outgoing

Qualifications Required

  • GCSE grade 4/C or above in English and maths (or equivalent)
  • Basic First Aid + F – not essential
  • Pa1 + Pa6 – not essential
  • Driving licence – not essential but need to be able to get to Nailstone at agreed start time and be collected at agreed finish time

Training Provided

Intermediate Forest Operative Standard.

  • Day/Block release to Brooksby Campus (part of the SMB Group)
  • Functional skills if necessary
  • On-the-job training
