Job Description

Our role in nuclear defence and what we do to support the UK’s nuclear deterrent, is vital in defending our country. From developing the warheads for the nuclear deterrent, to providing counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions, the work we do is of global importance. Explosives are at the heart of AWE’s mission.

Responsibilities

What will the apprentice be doing?

As an Explosives Technician you will ultimately be working for the heart of the company on either researching, manufacturing or testing explosives. You will attend a variety of classes or lectures which will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the tools and techniques that you will be using. This will also give you more information about the materials and processes that you may be following throughout your career in explosives. 

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

During the first part of your training you will learn the basics of explosive materials and what being an explosives worker means. Initial training will be  based around working in laboratories & workshops including on the equipment or apparatus for measuring explosive performance.

This will give you more information about the materials & processes that you may follow throughout your career in explosives. This may lead to further development as an Ordnance Munitions and Explosives Specialist.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

As an apprentice with AWE, you will be offered a full time contract from day one. Following the successful completion of the programme, you will move into a role within the business. This is typically a role where you have completed a placement as a part of the programme. From here, you will build your career as an AWE employee.
