Mechanical Engineering.

The Mechanical Engineering team work on a variety of exciting projects across both the Aerospace and Defence markets. The nature of the work is extremely varied and often requires complex solutions to solve technically challenging engineering problems facing our clients. From initial design concepts for new products, to qualification testing, certification and in-service support, we are involved at all stages of a project. Our wide range of skills and capabilities span numerous disciplines including classical and finite element stress analysis of composite and metallic components, systems engineering, fatigue and damage tolerance analysis through to composite and metallic design. Whatever your passion, you will be joining a high-end engineering team working on ground-breaking projects.

Our clients across the Aerospace and Defence sectors represent some of the biggest names in the UK’s most advanced industries. Each of them faces an exciting future with potential disruption, threats and opportunities resulting from the convergence of the physical and digital worlds. Recent projects which we have supported in these sectors include submarine nuclear propulsion design, dockyard design support, nuclear handling equipment and blast doors for a new defence facility, landing gear continuous product development, aircraft wing design and certification and composite test support. Working across design, systems engineering and structural analysis, we are looking for people who are digitally equipped to face the future needs of the market.

Asset Management.

Joining our Safety & Asset Management Division will mean that you are able to work with teams across multiple sectors in Resilience Engineering - making the world, systems and infrastructure Safe, Secure and Sustainable through Safety Engineering and Asset & Data Analytics.  

What is Asset and Analytical Engineering?

Applied throughout the lifecycle, Asset and Analytical Engineering is a consistent, systematic and iterative process, used to maximise equipment availability at optimal whole life cost.   Asset Engineering is focussed on influencing equipment design for support, such as, maintenance access, use of existing tools/test equipment and facilities. Analytical Engineering is digitising and utilising complex data to support effective decision making.

What is Resilience Critical Systems Engineering?

Resilience is the capability of systems, equipment and infrastructure to protect against safety, environmental and security/cyber threats throughout its lifecycle.  We analyse, assess and develop requirements to mitigate against these threats, providing assurance to our clients.  A critical system is any system whose 'failure' could threaten human life, the system's environment or the existence of the organisation which operates the system.

We apply a multidisciplinary and systematic approach to our work as there is rarely a black & white solution to our clients’ challenges. Engineers from all disciplines come together to create innovative solutions, working from both holistic and technical viewpoints to capture all aspects of a client’s problem. We need engineers who think laterally, approach problems in a systematic way and can collaborate in a team with members of varying skillsets and diverse backgrounds.

One of our recent successes was the work we completed on the T7 Bomb Disposal Robot for US defence company Harris. Atkins was perfectly placed to help Harris understand the requirements of the Ministry of Defence and thus guide their transition into the UK defence market. Atkins-led trials and analysis highlighted where the T7 design could be improved and assessed how the T7 robots will be supported throughout its lifecycle. 

As a member of the Safety and Asset Management team, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of state-of-the-art and market leading projects within our traditional areas of Aerospace and Defence but also in the markets of Nuclear, Rail and Cyber Security. With an excellent support network behind you, you will deliver the highest quality work, develop as a professional engineer and make a real impact on the work you take part in.

Qualifications Required

5 GCSEs (or equivalents) including a B/6 in mathematics & C/5 in English Language and Double Science + 120 UCAS points including mathematics and a stem related subject.

Training Provided

  • Level 6 BEng Degree

 

During your 5-year apprenticeship, no two days will be the same as you study and work with a variety of teams whilst developing the skills you need to enjoy a great future at Atkins. You will spend the first year at college full time and Years 2 to 5 will be one day a week at college with four days working in the office. You’ll study towards a Level 6 BEng degree qualification. Not only will you learn in the classroom, you’ll enjoy being part of the team as you will get involved with all kinds of projects and learn something new every day.
