Job Description

Engineering activities that are carried out will include routine maintenance, fault finding and diagnosis, testing and commissioning. Maintenance activities must contribute to optimising food production levels. Working with mechanical and electrical equipment including programmable control systems.


Responsibilities include:

  • Undertake a development programme leading to a National Vocational Qualification as part of the apprenticeship
  • You will actively participate in your own development plan; this will be agreed with both your line manager and the assessor from the training provider
  • Working under supervision to learn maintenance engineering skills including both scheduled maintenance and reactive repairs and preparing and reviewing relevant reports and documentation
  • To undertake relevant training on and operate plant as directed
  • To perform first line routine mechanical maintenance, including removing and replacing components, cleaning, lubrication, inspection and fault finding
  • Apply ‘best practice’ techniques, e.g. condition monitoring and proactive maintenance
  • Produce replacement components, using manual and machine processes
  • Weld stainless steel and other materials used in food production equipment
  • Commission and perform maintenance of instrumentation / process control systems
  • Perform first line electrical maintenance, including testing, fault finding, repairing and replacing components
  • Perform maintenance of programmable control systems
  • To take part in meeting, supervision and training as requested by the manager
  • To use information technology systems to carry out duties in the most efficient and effective manner
  • To achieve personal appraisal targets, as agreed by your line manager
  • To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, supervision and other events designed to improve communication and assist with the effective development of the post and the post holder
  • To carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with Apetito’s Policies and Procedures (as described in the company handbook)
  • To comply with food safety legislation and understand the features of working with consumable products and how this affects food industry maintenance practices
  • To carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with Apetito’s Health and Safety Policy and relevant Health and Safety Legislation

  • Food processing / manufacturing and product knowledge
  • Understanding of how to comply with regulations, including food safety and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
  • The impact of customer requirements and demands on the food supply chain
  • Materials science, including the key features of raw materials, their uses in food production and types of equipment used to process them
  • Principles of electrical systems, including their uses, safety and legislation
  • Services and utilities knowledge, including the importance and impact of energy management and pollution control in food production

Qualifications Required

  • A minimum of a grade 5/B or above in maths 
  • A minimum of 3 further GSCE's grade C/4 or above including English Language 

Training Provided

In partnership with Wiltshire College Chippenham you will be expected to undertake and achieve the following qualifications as part of the “Maintenance Operations and Engineering Technician” programme.

  • Foundation Mechanical and Electrical units – Performing Engineering Operations NVQ
  • NVQ Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance

C&G 2850 Level 3 Diploma in Engineering


BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering

  • There may also be the opportunity for a Level 2 C&G Award in Welding Skills
