Responsibilities
What will the apprentice be doing?
You will be supporting our engineers on site and learning from them every day when carrying out gas service and mains repair activities. The physical aspect of this job involves excavating/digging in the public/private highways laying and repairing gas pipes, so you will be working in a variety of outdoor environments safely and as part of a team.
The key parts of the role include:
- Excavating sites for gas network work
- Carrying out repair and replacement activities to our gas network infrastructure
- Disconnecting and removing gas meters from gas services, leaving it safe
- Responding to gas related emergency situations
- Restoring gas supplies
- Checking and maintaining tools and equipment before and after use in gas network infrastructure work
- Delivering great customer communications
- Challenging any unsafe behaviours.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
With this apprenticeship you will complete block release from East Sussex College's Eastbourne Campus. 20% of your contracted working hours will be spent on training. Training is anything that leads to you learning skills, knowledge and behaviours relevant to the apprenticeship. It will include mentoring, shadowing, block release, meetings with your assessor, written work, putting together a portfolio of evidence etc.

As part of the apprenticeship you will complete:
- The Level 2 Gas Networks Operative Standard. You will receive either a grade Pass or Distinction after completing your final End Point Assessment.
- Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English if you don't have GCSEs at grades C/4 or above or equivalent. We will then try and upskill you to Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English.
- Gas Network Construction Operations (Level 1) Diploma- Pass
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Following successful completion of this 2-year programme you will join our team on a full-time basis where there will be lots of opportunities to develop your skills further. We want someone who wants to progress career wise and has a passion for the industry.
