Job Description

C F Roberts Electrical & Mechanical Services are looking for the next cohort of Electrical apprentices to successfully complete a 4 year apprenticeship, whilst working alongside skilled engineers in a commercial and industrial environment throughout the UK.

Responsibilities

This apprenticeship covers both college and on-site training and encompasses working both at large construction sites and small planned maintenance projects.

Whilst working under the supervision of our qualified engineers and supported by both C F Roberts Management team and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (Stroud Campus), you will be required to undertake and develop your skills, knowledge and competency following within the following roles and responsibilities:

  • Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
  • Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and Electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment 
  • Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of Electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in Electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
  • Work within and maintain a health and safe working environment

Due to our work being across the country our engineers and apprentices often work away from home Monday to Friday and some of our work demands out of hours repairs, therefore often have to work unsociable hours.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in electrical installation and to apply these skills in a real and growing business environment. Previous apprentices within the organisation have progressed into roles to include either office or site supervision or management. Progression opportunities will be discussed with you if/where available.

Reality Check

The Electrical industry can be fast paced and demanding. Often you will be required to work away from home on projects around the UK. This apprenticeship may also have unsociable hours of work due to the nature of the business.

On receipt of your application, you will be required to complete a CF Roberts application form and return it along with a copy of your CV. The company will then review shortlisted applicants. If you are successful, you will be contacted by CF Roberts for an interview, following an interview at SGS College. 

The National Minimum Wage for an apprentice from 1st April 2022 is £4.81 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year. Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year. The minimum wage rates from 1st April 2022 are £6.83 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £9.18 for 21-22 year olds and £9.50 for anyone aged 23 and over. Skills Required

  • Apprentices must be able to take instruction, be a good communicator and have manual dexterity
  • Driving license desirable due to the requirement to travel as part of the role

Qualities Required

  • The successful candidate must be reliable, flexible, calm, patient and persistent, with strong attention to detail
  • You must be self-motivated and enthusiastic and work well using your own initiative
  • Willingness to work away from home as required by the organisation is essential
  • Having the right attitude, work ethic and commitment to your education as well as your employment are essential requirements to this role

Qualifications Required

  • Although GCSE (or equivalent) Grades A*-C/9-4 in Maths, English Language and Science are desirable, and knowledge or use of ICT preferred, CF Roberts will also consider applicants who are willing to develop these through additional training to include Functional Skills as part of the apprenticeship programme

Training Provided

The Advanced Apprenticeship is delivered over 4 years. Apprentices are required to spend a minimum of 20% of their employed hours on off-the-job learning. 

For this apprenticeship, Apprentices are required to attend college on block release to complete underpinning knowledge studies towards the qualification. Other activity which contributes to the 20% element can take place in the workplace. 

Some apprentices may also need to achieve functional skills in maths and English, which will require additional hours in college, this is normally delivered during your block release dates.

The assessor will visit the apprentice and support their progress through on-site assessment and regular reviews within the workplace.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) is delivered and assessed externally once all other criteria of the apprenticeship is achieved.

On completion of your apprenticeship, you will have achieved the following from the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrotechnical Installations:

  • Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
  • Functional Skills Maths & English (where applicable)
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)
  • Personal Thinking & Learning Skills (PTLS)
  • British Values
  • Achievement Measurement (AM2) (End Point Assessment)
