Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Nursery Apprentice to join our small and friendly team at Manor House Nursery and Kindergarten. The position is based in the Early Years department of a supportive independent girl’s school.

HOURS ARE EITHER 08.00 - 16.00 OR 10.00 - 18.00

The successful applicant will be working within our co-educational Nursery with children aged 2-4 years old. There will also be the opportunity to develop your skills by spending time with girls in the Reception class and occasionally in Key Stage 1. You will be working alongside specialist Early Years staff in a friendly, enthusiastic team who are passionate about Early Years, love what they do and are willing to support you.

The Nursery is open from 8.00am to 6.00pm. The apprentice will be required to work mainly from 8.00am to 4.00pm. They will occasionally be asked to work 10.00am to 6.00 pm to work in the after-school club, which is based in the Nursery. These hours are subject to change as there are plans to extend the Nursery provision to cover school holidays.

The successful applicant will be based in the Nursery classroom working with children aged two to three but they will also spend time with the children in Kindergarten who are aged three to four years old.

They will be expected to support the children’s learning through adult led activities, both in the classroom and outdoor learning areas. The apprentice will be required to carry out observations on the children and will be trained to use an online learning journal on an iPad. This information will be discussed in weekly staff meetings, which they will attend during nursery hours.

Under the supervision of the Nursery class leader, they will carry out the following duties:
Work as part the team to prepare and clear away resources and learning activities.
Carry out playtime and lunch duties as necessary on a rotational basis with other staff.
Help to ensure the arrival and departure of the children is properly recorded and monitored.
Liaise with parents and carers and other visitors on site, making them feel welcome.
Ensure the highest standard of hygiene including nappy changing, cleaning of resources and food preparation.
Read all the policies and procedures and ensure they are familiar with them.
Free two-course lunch which is usually eaten with the children in the Dining Hall.

Future Prospects

We are looking to support an apprentice through their Level 3 qualification and beyond. At the end of the apprenticeship, we would envisage the individual becoming a permanent member of the Manor House team and would continue to support their career progression. We have proven track record in this with one our Nursery staff now embarking on a Level 6 qualification having joined us as a Level 3 practitioner. We have also mentored a qualified teacher through her NQT year.

The apprentice would be joining at an exciting time as the school is aiming to extend the nursery provision to offer holiday provision and they would be part of that transition giving lots of opportunity for career progression.
