Job Description

To work as part of the pre-school team under the direction of the managers and deputy showing initiative and creativity to help foster an environment which provides safe, high quality education and care for children attending and pre-school in accordance with our procedures, policies, parents' wishes and the children's individual needs.



The role will include:

  • Helping to set up equipment both indoors and outside for the daily programme and help tidy away at the end of each session/day
  • To follow routines, duties, timetables, rotas, record keeping activities and any other reasonable duty requested line managers, deputy or the management committee on a day to day basis, i.e; register of children, accident/incident book, health and safety risk assessments etc.
  • To study and learn via attending your apprenticeship training the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and ensure your practice meets and aims to exceed requirements
  • To be proactive in the process of activity planning as part of the curriculum using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for guidance
  • To act as a key person to a small group of children, liaising closely and building an effective relationship with parents/carers and ensuring each child’s needs are recognised and met
  • To ensure that communication with children, parents/carers and the staff team is polite and courteous at all times
  • Listen to, encourage, enable, stimulate and ensure the safe keeping of the children
  • Work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members
  • To share only relevant information and ensure that information passed between parents/carers and staff members is communicated to your managers or deputy as appropriate
  • To maintain confidentiality about all issues/information related to children, their families, your own and other staff members issues and any management or operational issues
  • To maintain and follow all Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times
  • To develop a thorough knowledge of and adhere to at all times the pre-school’s operational policies and procedures; ensuring that they are followed and respected at all times
  • To advise the managers of any concerns, e.g. over children, parents or the safety of equipment, preserving confidentiality as necessary
  • To teach children, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulating play experiences
  • To ensure that children are kept safe and that you understand when to follow child protection procedures
  • To support snack and lunch times within the pre-school
  • To actively participate at staff meetings or training courses as required and to take responsibility for your on-going development
  • Share any beneficial training or experiences with the pre-school giving constructive feedback and reading relevant material given at courses
  • To assist with regular observations of children and activities
  • To complete on-going assessment records and ensure they are regularly updated on allocated key person children
  • To report on assessment records to parents/carers of key person children at key person appointments. To support the other members of staff, students and volunteers
  • To work alongside the parents and other staff in encouraging their child to use a toilet independently
  • To change children’s clothes as and when required – if they get wet or messy during play
  • To assist children with their toileting. This includes changing of nappies/pull ups and the transition from these to using the toilet or a potty independently. (Training on this procedure will be given before allowing you to change a child’s nappy)
  • To ensure clean and hygienic standards are maintained at all times, which includes daily cleaning rotas and other pre-school/housekeeping duties
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the managers, deputy or management committee, in accordance with the pre-school business plan/objectives

Dress code and Personal Conduct:

  • You will be expected to present a clean and smart appearance at all times
  • Only stud earrings to be worn while at pre-school (no dangling earrings)
  • Jewellery must be kept to a minimum to prevent personal or child injury
  • Hair must be kept neat and tidy and to be tied back if longer than shoulder length
  • Tattoos must be covered wherever possible
  • A smart appearance is vital to maintain the professional image of the pre-school
  • These measures help us to meet the criteria as stated in the Health & Safety at Work Legislation and they also protect against injury to you and the children in your care
  • To establish and maintain good working relationships and ensure care is taken when communicating with others to avoid unnecessary conflict
  • To encourage an atmosphere of co-operation and respect
  • To ensure that polite, courteous and helpful attitude is demonstrated at all times to the children, their parents/carers, to other staff members and the management committee
  • To maintain and respect confidentiality at all times

Future Prospects

Possibility of permanent position being offered once the apprenticeship has been completed.

Reality Check

Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

Skills Required

  • To be able to work as part of a team and have the ability to plan, organise and evaluate appropriate activities for children
  • To be able to communicate at all levels including with children and adults

Qualities Required

  • Be honest, reliable, have the ability to demonstrate good judgement, common sense and also the ability to use their own initiative

Qualifications Required

GCSE maths and English or equivalent (Functional skills) desired but not essential.

Level 2 Qualification required.
