Job Description

White Light is a leading company in the areas of lighting, video, sound hire and installations. Our apprenticeships give people the opportunity to be the potential future experts in these areas. Our programme enables participants to become highly trained with practical experience gained in the entertainment lighting, sound & video industry.


What will the apprentice be doing?

Induction - 1 week - meetings and in department
History of WL
Health & Safety training
WL Systems & Procedures

Year 1
Warehouse departments rotations, a month in each department learning to repair and maintain lighting, sound, and video equipment

Day to day tasks will include:

  • Loading and unloading trucks
  • Cleaning, coiling and checking cables 
  • Cleaning, checking and repairing lanterns
  • Checking and storing rigging equipment
  • Learning how to repair moving lights, smoke machines and other lighting equipment

Year 2
work and attend onsite events with our Events and Servicing departments, or work in a specific technical department

Day to day tasks will include:

  • Helping set up  lighting equipment in different venues for events 
  • Helping set up Audio Visual equipment for conferences 
  • Assist with annual servicing of theatre lighting systems

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

This Level 3 “Creative Venue Technician” apprenticeship is a mixture of 80% work and hands on training at White Light, and 20% course and college work.

You will be given study time however you must have a commitment to complete the college work and online portfolio, which will be written, visual and digital.

Access Creative College operates meetings, training and reviews online but there will be some sessions at White Light, and some travel required for specific courses.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

On passing the apprenticeship we aim to offer permanent jobs if possible.  All of the skills, knowledge and experience learnt are really useful to us, often you will find out about jobs that you didn’t know existed. The qualification is recognised in the industry if you want to work somewhere else.

Reality Check

The work will be physical and will include loading and unloading trucks and manoeuvring equipment. There are mechanisms and safe operating procedures to ensure this is completed safely. You will receive full Health and Safety Training. At times you may work outside
