Leonardo’s four-year Craft Transmissions Repair and Overhaul Apprenticeship provides a wealth of learning and development opportunities. By the end of the scheme Apprentices will have completed a Level 3 Vocational (work related) qualification in Aerospace Manufacturing, as well as a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering.

Responsibilities

The Dynamics composites Centre is the area that manufactures blades for many of the Leonardo Helicopters aircraft, including military, civil and VVIP aircraft. The blades are manufactured from the raw material.  Working with world-leading specialists, you will increase your technical skills and capability, and develop your academic and practical understanding of the diverse world that is manufacturing & supply chain.

You will undertake a series of three-six-month rotational placements – covering the following areas:

  • Transmissions Fitting: This area covers the Build and test of the aircraft gearboxes (Main, Intermediate and tail gear boxes) both new build and in-service gear boxes
  • New Build:  Apprentices will learn and be expected to understand, evaluate and identify potential improvements within the business
  • Repair and Overhaul:  Gearboxes from in-service aircraft require maintenance. In this area, in-service gearboxes will be stripped and surveyed on receipt. Appropriate work is then carried out to bring them back to a serviceable level

Key Responsibilities

The structure of the Apprenticeship programme will be as follows:

Year 1: Full time at Yeovil College to complete a Level 2 Competence qualification in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering (practical/workshop based) and a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering (knowledge/classroom based).

Year 2: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and starting the Level 3 Competence (work related) qualification in Aerospace Manufacturing.  Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to start the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering qualification (this includes mathematics to AS/A2 level).

Year 3: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (4 days per week) and continuing the Level 3 Competence (work related) qualification in Aerospace Manufacturing.  Attend Yeovil College (1 day per week) to continue the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aeronautical Engineering qualification (this includes mathematics to AS/A2 level).

Year 4: Work placements at Leonardo Helicopters (5 days per week) and completing the Level 3 Competence (work related) qualification in Aerospace Manufacturing.

During years 2, 3 & 4, apprentices will follow a structured placement programme designed to ensure broad practical experience is gained in the required competences. Apprentices will work with skilled fitters in each work placement to learn the required skills.
