Job Description

As a Multi-Skilled Engineering Apprentice you will work closely with all areas of the operations, focusing mainly on the engineering applications. For the right person, there is the opportunity to secure full time employment and progress to higher level qualifications.

Responsibilities

This is an exciting time to be part of the Engineering Department within Compass Minerals at Winsford Rock Salt Mine, playing a key role in our journey to provide expertise in optimising, integrating and supporting mine operations. Our purpose is to improve the competitive advantage of Compass Minerals through the use of technology and our Apprentice Programme focuses on recruiting and developing our Technicians of the future.

As a Multi-Skilled Engineering Apprentice you will work closely with all areas of the operations, focusing mainly on the engineering applications. By supporting you to gain NVQ and BTEC qualifications, the programme will help you to develop as a multi-skilled engineer working on a range of mechanical and electrical equipment. You will spend the majority of your working week on site at the Winsford Rock Salt Mine and a day a week studying at a local college.

Your role will involve but won't be restricted to:

  • Preventative scheduled maintenance of plant machinery
  • Machine Fault Finding (mechanical and electrical) and repair
  • Sourcing and fitting replacement parts
  • Use of hand and power tools to assist in the role
  • Maintain Factory infrastructure
  • Completing the appropriate reports on breakdown or scheduled maintenance
  • Utilising the appropriate software systems to log all maintenance activities
  • Fault Finding and repair to hydraulic, pneumatics and PLC systems
  • Electrical test and repair and installation
  • Maintain and repair ancillary factory equipment
  • Welding and fabrication

Future Prospects

  • Following your apprenticeship, you will become a multi-skilled maintenance engineer
  • The shift pattern after the completion of the Apprenticeship will be a mixture of 6am-2pm, 1pm-9pm, 8pm-6am (generally Monday to Friday with some weekend working). This is based on an annualised hours contract of 2085 hours per annum

  • All Apprentices will be based at the Compass Minerals UK Limited Rock Salt Mine in Winsford, Cheshire
  • Stoke College is our chosen training provider and Apprentices will travel there one day each week. Travel to the Winsford site will not be paid for but we do generally pay travel to college

Qualifications Required

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs including maths, English and Science Grade 4 / C or above (minimum of a 5 / B in maths is preferred)

Training Provided

Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard:

This 4 year programme will include:

  • Engineering Basic Skills training off the job full time at Make UK in Aston, Birmingham
  • NVQ Level 3 in Engineering
  • A Technical Certificate (BTEC Diploma Level 3 in Engineering)
  •  In house training in line with your requirements
