Job overview

Our Engineers focus on the assets that form the foundation of our transport network’s building infrastructure. As a Building Services Engineering apprentice, you’ll help us provide our customers with a bright, clean, functional and welcoming environment that is safe and accessible to all, whilst keeping in line with passenger growth demands delivered through our line upgrades and improvement programmes. You’ll help us retain and develop the in-house knowledge of our Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) assets as we upgrade our legacy assets to become safer, more reliable, automated and energy efficient.

What will I be doing?


The Building Services Engineering discipline covers the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of E&M assets serving buildings of different types within the TfL infrastructure. E&M assets include, lighting, low voltage, lightning protection, domestic water, gas, heating, air conditioning and ventilation sub-assets. These assets which are located within a range of places such as; tube/rail stations, railway line side equipment rooms, railway depots, line control centres and road tunnels are essential to the operation of the TfL tube, rail & road infrastructure.

As an apprentice, your five-year development programme will be made up of up of several six-month placement rotations spread across all elements of this TfL infrastructure. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career. We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every apprentice’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Year 1

Placement 1 - London Underground Renewals & Enhancement – Stations, Buildings & Civils (Six months) – You will become familiar with the development of technical scopes, design preparation and installation/commissioning support for short term local infrastructure performance improvements on London Underground stations. These short term projects could include platform re-lighting, asset resilience/strengthening, minor station refurbishments and tunnel ventilation fan upgrade works.

Placement 2 - Docklands Light Railway (DLR) Beckton depot - (Six months) – You will support the development of technical scopes for the DLR infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to support in the supervision of external design and installation. You will also be involved in commissioning support for medium scale performance improvements on the DLR system.

Year 2

Placement 3 – London Underground Renewals & Enhancement – Signalling, Power & Cooling - (Six months) You will focus on refining your understanding of the technical scopes development and preparation of designs for projects on London Underground line side infrastructure. This will include preparing designs and installing or commissioning support for medium scale infrastructure performance improvements. You will gain experience improving e.g. substation ventilation and mid tunnel ventilation fans. You will also be involved in station air velocity mitigations & cooling upgrade works.

Placement 4 - Northern Line Extension - (Six months) You will be developing technical scopes for the new extension to the Northern Line. You will also be involved with installation of and commissioning support for the various relevant infrastructures.

Year 3

Placement 5 - Road/street lighting infrastructure - (Six months) You will have an opportunity to work on design preparation and installation of TfL’s street and road lighting infrastructure, focusing on performance improvements. You will be required to provide support for commissioning of these infrastructure improvements where necessary.

Placement 6 - Deep Tube Upgrade programme (Six months) – You will assist in the preparation of technical work scopes or designs for major tube line capacity upgrade works. There will be particular emphasis on design assurance. You will be involved in installation and commission support for provision of new line service control centres, equipment rooms and power infrastructure.


Each placement has set learning objectives which will support you in achieving the qualifications required for your apprenticeship.


At the end of the 3rd year, you will choose to specialise in either the Electrical or Mechanical area, with university modules selected to match this decision. The remainder of the scheme placements will support you in fine tuning the specialist knowledge of your chosen area. Your further placements could then involve working on aspects of projects such as London Underground Future Stations, Deep Tube Upgrade or the TfL Surface Tunnel Investment Programme.

Where can this career take me?


Upon successful completion of this scheme, you could roll-off into a Band 2 Engineer position in one of our E&M sub-teams. From here, you could have the opportunity to continue developing into one of our resident technical experts, an experienced Senior Project Engineer or even a Senior Manager. The current Director of Engineering and the Major Projects Director for TfL both started their careers as technician apprentices demonstrating that our apprentices can aspire to senior management positions or anything else in between.


The qualification you will earn is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)


What training and support will you get?


You will be working towards a level 6 qualification in Building Services Engineering.


Typically, you will be required to attend University for 1 day per week.


Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. We’ll also support your professional development through a combination of classroom-led training courses, online training courses, mentoring opportunities and structured networking opportunities. You will receive one-to-one support throughout the programme from your scheme sponsor and your Line Manager and your own personal ‘buddy’.


Entry requirements


  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s Grade A* - C or Grade 4 and above including Maths and English language.
  • Plus a minimum of three A levels at A* - C including Maths and Physics/Chemistry.

You are not eligible for this scheme if you currently hold or are working towards a qualification at the same or higher level in a related subject or have already studied content from the qualification for this scheme.


You must be 18 years of age by 26th June 2020 to be eligible for this scheme.
