Job Description

Would you like to undertake the installation, testing, commissioning and decommissioning of large-scale engineering systems which are used for heating workplaces? This JTL delivered Apprenticeship will teach you to become a competent heating and ventilation engineer.


Some of the things that a craftsperson may be expected to do are:

  • Install, maintain and repair water services (e.g. heating pipework, radiators, boilers)
  • Install, maintain and repair ductwork systems (e.g. ducts, extract grilles,)
  • Commission systems to ensure maximum efficiency against design specification
  • Work indoors and outdoors and be prepared to work at height
  • Work with little or no supervision; relying on their own initiative
  • Develop good working relationships with people
  • Read construction and engineering drawings
  • Understand control wiring and circuit diagrams
  • Select replacement parts, materials and equipment
  • Inspect and test systems and equipment as part of planned or reactive maintenance
  • Diagnose and rectify faults on a range of heating & ventilating systems and equipment
  • Write reports

Future Prospects

The advertised Apprentice wage will increase yearly or upon completion of progressive stages. After initially qualifying, you could go on to supervisory roles, senior management positions or even running your own business.

Qualifications Required

All candidates must complete the JTL BKSB Assessment.

Level 3 Building Services Engineering Craftsperson Apprenticeship Standard, which includes:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Heating and Ventilating Craftsperson Qualification (Industrial and Commercial)
  • Functional Skills at Level 2
  • End Point Assessment
