During your 3-year apprenticeship, no two days will be the same as you study and work with a variety of teams whilst developing the skills you need to enjoy a great future at Atkins. Spending either one day a week at the college or doing block weeks. Not only will you learn in the classroom, you’ll enjoy being part of the team as you will get involved with all kinds of projects and learn something new every day for example:

  • Helping the design of safety critical signalling and telecommunications for a range of rail projects using Computer Aided Design
  • Drawing specifications and writing safety documentations/reports
  • Occasional site visits to survey the areas

Skills Required

  • The ability to work in a team, assisting with the smooth running of a variety of projects
  • Creativity and strong communication skills
  • A lateral thinker who can apply technical knowledge to analyse problems, create innovative solutions and make sound decisions and isn’t afraid to push boundaries

Qualities Required

  • To work across different locations on a variety of projects, constantly developing your skills and experience
  • To be reliable, practical and self-motivated
  • To use your own initiative
  • Be UK mobile to work across different locations on a variety of projects

Qualifications Required

GCSEs or equivalent including a B/6 in mathematics & C/5 in English Language and Literature + A Levels or equivalent, to include maths or Physics.

  • High Speed Rail and Infrastructure Technician Higher Apprenticeship

The apprenticeship standard consists of core knowledge, skills and behaviours, plus one of several options as a pathway depending upon the employer requirements and apprentice’s job role.  This is typically a 3-year apprenticeship, delivered in partnership with the employer on a block release basis.

Apprenticeship standards require apprentices to participate in a minimum of 20% off the job training during paid working hours, this will include time spent studying at NCATI and workplace training.

Apprenticeship standards are assessed through an end point assessment (EPA), the EPA commences once the apprentice, employer and college, all agree that the apprentice is ready and consists of 3 elements.

  1. Knowledge Test
  2. Practical Observation
  3. Professional Discussion

The apprenticeship outcome will be graded as a pass, merit or distinction.
