Job Description

The Regal is an independent three auditoria cinema and theatre located in Stowmarket. Alongside the latest blockbuster films, i.e. Spiderman, Dr Strange and Top Gun, it also screens live and recorded event performances, hosts live shows including music, comedy and theatrical performances. We are looking for an apprentice to join the team.


What will the apprentice be doing?

The Regal is owned and managed by Stowmarket Town Council. A real cornerstone of the town, it's loved and supported by the local community. Reopened in May 2021 following a fifteen month, £3.71m redevelopment project, which included building two additional auditoria, the 1936 café bar and backstage facilities. In its first year since reopening it has had 115,092 visitors.  Equipped with latest digital laser projection, it was the first cinema in the UK to install the new latest Barco modes in all three auditoriums. It has state of the art Dolby surround sound systems, and one of the largest screens in East Anglia.

You will become immersed in the world of outstanding customer service and delivery; learn about the evolving processes from programming to projection and the importance of the Arts and Entertainment industry to the economy and society.

Your daily duties will include:

· To contribute fully, and effectively, towards the creation and retention of an outstanding customer service ethos at (The Regal)

· To perform all duties in accordance with the training provided and written procedures issued from time to time, to staff, including the “Guest Journey” document created for managing the customer experience

· To work within the box office assisting customers with film and product selections and purchases, making additional product suggestions where appropriate

· To undertake various duties within the Café Bar including seating customers, taking orders, communicating effectively with kitchen staff, preparing drinks, waiting tables, cleaning and polishing cutlery, rotating stock and ensuring tables are kept tidy and clean

· To be responsible for assisting with the timely showing of scheduled films through the use of projection and sound equipment and assisting with equipment maintenance through regular monitoring, reporting any issues to management

· To ensure that high standards of cleanliness are maintained throughout all areas of the (venue), including auditoriums, toilets, corridors, food areas and the foyer

· To assist the Management Team in operating a safe working environment

· To assist with various duties within the kitchen including following stock rotation systems, preparing food in line with set specifications and hygiene standards

· To undertake any other duties that may be required by the Management Team that are consistent with the safe and effective operation of The Regal on a day-to-day basis

Desirable qualities of our apprentice would be:

· Interest in, the film, theatre and entertainment industry

· Knowledge of health and safety within the work place, and food hygiene 

· Interest in working with cinematic equipment (projectors and sound)

· Experience of working within a customer focussed environment using till systems and cash handling

· Experience of preparing and serving food and drinks in line and food hygiene standards

· A thorough commitment to the delivery of excellent customer service putting customers at ease and making them feel welcome

· A commitment to the team ethos and being able to work with others in a highly collaborative way

· A “can do” approach in doing everything necessary to promote the Regal from supporting high profile civic, business and community events at the theatre to day to day requirements of washing, cleaning, litter collection and recycling

· A passion to serve the local community, working positively with work colleagues to forge a positive reputation for the Regal 

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • The apprentice will be studying Customer Service Practitioner Level 2; suitable candidates may progress to Level 3
  • Day release to West Suffolk College.
  • Functional skills will be studied if equivalent qualifications are not held.

We are committed to training and developing our apprentices. You will be provided with a mentor to support you throughout your apprenticeship. You will develop the skills you need for your job by working alongside your colleagues and getting hands on experience. Our most recent apprentice has been appointed to a fulltime duty manager position.


What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Upon completion there may be a full-time customer service role available for a successful apprentice.

Reality Check

Working evenings, weekends and bank holidays throughout the year, sometimes at short notice. Means of transportation if you do not live in Stowmarket.
