Responsibilities

Apprenticeships in Energy

England: Reading, Slough, Poole, New Forest, Portsmouth, Petersfield, Melksham

Salary: Circa £10,000 with a yearly increase and company benefits

We’re at the forefront of the fight against climate change - looking to finding better, more efficient and affordable ways of producing clean, green energy and need the next generation of Apprentices to help us do this. Whether you’re at the beginning of your career journey or looking to take a new direction from the path you’re currently on, our Apprenticeship opportunities are open to all and offer a chance to earn money while you gain an accredited qualification.

What is the role?

We have opportunities for you to join us as an Electrical Apprentice in our Rail Contracting business, as a Multi Craft Apprentice in our Renewables business and as a Linesperson, or Electrical Fitter in our Distribution or Transmission business. Depending on the role you may;

  • Isolate electrical systems
  • Rewire lights
  • Maintain and test plant & equipment
  • Work on the overhead cables and pole mounted equipment, install, identify, joint and connect electricity cables.
  • Excavate, measure and join underground cables

All these roles offer you the chance to become a qualified tradesperson in your chosen field. The programme can take 3 to 4 years to complete and is centred on work-based learning and training linked directly to the job. By the end of the programme you’ll have gained valuable on-the job experience, new skills and an industry recognised accreditation, that will offer you the opportunity to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector.

The majority of our apprentices attend college on a block release arrangement for several weeks at any one time; this will mean you may have to live away from home for short periods of time but we will support you fully during this time.

You will be supported by our Apprentice Programme Manager, a dedicated mentor, your SSE colleagues who you'll work with during your on the job training and also by the support you will receive from your college tutors. Sustainability underpins everything we do so we believe in making the most of our most valuable assets - our people - and supporting them to be their best. With a carefully designed development programme, you’ll have everything you need to progress your SSE career as far as you want to go.

What do I need?

We’re looking to recruit the best future talent for our sector – and we know that it’s not all about qualifications.  We’re more interested in your innate strengths and the qualities you can bring to SSE.

Our apprentices need to be far more than technical experts in their field, they need to be able to demonstrate an ability to use their initiative, be resilient to the continual changes within our sector and always focussed on delivering great results.  You’ll have a thirst for knowledge and be able to pick up new skills quickly, working with others to achieve common goals and adjusting your behaviour to reflect the diversity of our workforce and customer base.  Naturally, you’ll have a focus on safety and will adhere to our company motto “if it’s not safe, we don’t do it.”

About SSE

We all have different skills here at SSE and that’s what makes us stand out. We all take pride in a job well done and share the belief that an inclusive culture is key to our success and vision for the future. Above all, safety is at the heart of everything we do at SSE and we live by the mantra ‘if it’s not safe, we don’t do it’. SSE is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
