Job Description

Are you looking to start your career within a supportive teaching environment? Hall Green School are currently looking to recruit a conscientious and professional apprentice to join the school as a Teaching Assistant.


The successful candidate will be a reliable, enthusiastic and a flexible team-player who can communicate well with staff and pupils alike.  The duties and responsibilities attached to this post are as follows:

To aid pupils to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

  • Clarifying and explaining instructions
  • Motivating and encouraging the pupil(s) as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs
  • Assisting in weaker areas as appropriate e.g. speech and language, behaviour, reading, spelling, numeracy, handwriting/presentation etc.
  • Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies
  • Meeting pupils’ physical needs while encouraging independence e.g. help pupils to change for PE lessons or swimming, help with mobility around the school, clean and reassure pupils after accidental soiling of clothes
  • Meeting pupils’ personal and intimate care needs: e.g.  support the day-to-day toileting needs of male pupils, manual handling of pupils, changing and disposing of incontinence pads, inserting and removal of catheters, intimate cleaning following toileting, and changing soiled clothing and to administer medication when required
  • To establish supportive relationships with the pupil(s) concerned
  • To promote the acceptance and inclusion of the pupil(s) with SEN, encouraging pupils to interact with each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner
  • Monitor the pupils’ response to the learning activities and, where appropriate, modify or adapt the activities as agreed with the teacher to achieve the intended learning outcomes

To support the pupil(s) in:

  • Developing social skills
  • Use of ICT in learning activities

To support non-teaching time supervision e.g. duty times.

This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak and write fluently in English is an essential requirement for this role.

Future Prospects

We may have a requirement for a permanent member of staff within the team after successful completion of the apprenticeship programme.

Reality Check

As a Teaching Assistant, you are responsible for the safety and support of students in and out of the classroom. Our SEND Team support our students with additional physical and or learning needs, discretion and professionalism is very important.

You will also require an Enhanced DBS Check as part of your application to the vacancy.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you will be required to undertake additional training, attend team meetings and process through our Induction Programme to successfully work within the school. This may include areas such as Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Prevent training etc.

Qualifications Required

  • Must have GCSE Grade C (4) or equivalent in both English and maths or Functional Skills Level 2 in both English and maths
  • Teaching Assistant Level 1 or 2 will be desirable

Training Provided

College day will be 1 day a week based at South & City College Birmingham - Hall Green Campus.

  • Teaching Assistant Level 3 Standard apprenticeship one day per week based at South and City College Birmingham - Hall Green Campus
  • Apprentices without English and maths at Level 2 must achieve these prior to taking the End Point Assessment
