The Federation of Fairfield and Colneis are partnership of two schools: Fairfield Infant and Colneis Junior Schools. The popular infant and junior schools, based on separate sites, have been successfully collaborating for around 12 years and in a Federation for 4 years. Fairfield Infant school have an opportunity for an Apprentice to join the team.

Responsibilities

To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff to assist in promoting the learning and personal development of the children that you are working with.  You will undertake work/care/support programmes to enable access to learning for all pupils to whom you are assigned, to enable him/her to make best use of the educational opportunities available to them. You may also work individually on a 1-1 basis with children, including those who have additional needs. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area. 

Duties and Responsibilities to include:

For all Pupils:

  • Direct, supervise and provide particular support for pupils, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Establish good professional relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Promote British values and the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Support pupils who exhibit challenging behaviour by helping them to recognise triggers and implement de-escalation techniques
  • Deliver intervention programmes to individuals or groups of children
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher
  • As appropriate, look after sick or upset pupils administering basic first aid as required.
  • Attend to the physical needs of pupils
  • Supervise pupils during break times and plan and organise activities if required

For the 1-1 support, to aid the pupil to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own by, for example:

  • To establish supportive relationships with the pupil concerned
  • To promote the acceptance and inclusion of the pupil with SEN, encouraging pupils to interact with each other in an appropriate and acceptable manner
  • Clarifying and explaining instructions
  • Ensuring the pupil is able to use equipment and materials provided
  • Motivating and encouraging the pupil(s) as required by providing levels of individual attention, reassurance and help with learning tasks as appropriate to pupils’ needs
  • Using praise, commentary and assistance to encourage the pupil to concentrate and stay on task
  • Liaising with class teacher, SENCO and other professionals about individual education plans (IEPs), contributing to the planning and delivery as appropriate
  • Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies
  •   Helping to make appropriate resources to support the pupil
  • To give positive encouragement, feedback and praise to reinforce and sustain the pupil’s efforts and develop self-reliance and self-esteem.
  • To support the pupil in developing social skills both in and out of the classroom
  • To provide regular feedback on the pupil’s learning and behaviour to the   teacher/SENCO
  • To accompany teacher and pupils on educational visits    

Support for the Teacher:

  • Help to create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans
  • Assist with the display of pupils’ work
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning and behaviour goals
  • Assist with the planning of learning activities
  • Observe and monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/ progress and observations as directed
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress, problems etc.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establish good relationships with parents/carers
  • Administer routine tests and undertake routine marking of pupils’ work
  • Provide clerical/admin support e.g., photocopying, typing, filing, etc.

Support for the Curriculum:

  • Deliver structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses
  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use

Support for the School:

  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, pupil behaviour, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Promote the ethos, work and aims of the school
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including at play times, during assembly and before and after school, if necessary
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils at lunch times when required
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Prepare playtime drinks for staff and assist with maintaining a clean and tidy environment around the school

Future Prospects

  • Although there are no guarantees, this post could provide the opportunity for a full time teaching assistant role on completion of the apprenticeship

Qualities Required

  • Committed to supporting children in enjoying their learning and achieving
  • Experience of working with children that have additional needs is an advantage but not essential
  • Flexibility and adaptable
  • A creative and reflective learner with a sense of fun

Qualifications Required

  • Minimum 5 A*-C (9-4) with English and maths, or equivalent
