Job Description

Have you considered training to be a Safety, Health and Environment Technician? The University of Birmingham has an estate that includes two hundred buildings and half a million square metres of floor space. Outside there are a hundred hectares of grounds and twenty hectares of sports pitches, all maintained and developed by the Estates Office.


What will the apprentice be doing?

As a Safety, Health and Environment Technician apprentice you will be part of the Estates department, Health and Safety team.

You will work with many different teams across the department to help them develop and maintain a safe working environment. You will learn how to provide advice, to help assess risk, and carry out supported visits, across the University campus’. You will support the development, implementation and compliance of the Estates department and UoB policies and guidance. 

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

The apprentice will study the apprenticeship standard, safety, health and environment technician level 3 with our partner training provider. 

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

There are many options for career progression including applying to become a permanent Safety, Health and Environment Technician either within Estates or elsewhere in the University. Upon completion learners will be able to join the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) at TechIOSH level. They will also be eligible to join the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) at Affiliate level.
