Responsibilities

Hudsons Plant Centre in Willington are looking for an apprentice to work in the garden centre working towards Level 2 Apprenticeship in Retailing. The main purpose of a retailer is to assist customers in their journey through the garden centre, being able to offer advice on goods through to checking out at the till.

The primary role of the candidate will be to work in the plant area, putting out stock, plant maintenance, mechandising, as well as general maintenance of the plant area. However, as the apprenticeship covers all aspects of retailing, duties will be geared to ensure that all key areas of the apprenticeship are covered.

  • Dealing with deliveries
  • Putting plants into pots and trays, ready to sell
  • Setting out displays of plants, pots and garden tools
  • Using a wheelbarrow or trolley to move heavy items such as trees or bags of soil
  • Helping to carry and load heavy items to customers’ cars
  • Operating the till at the checkout, taking cash and card payments

The post will be at 30 hours per week, generally between 9am and 5pm over 5 days, though there may be occasions when the candidate will be asked to work for limited times outside of this. Additional hours will be available in peak seasons, usually April to July and December. The apprenticeship itself takes 14 months followed by a 3 month assessment period. Opportunities for full time employment at the end of the apprenticeship period are likely.

This vacancy is for at least the length of the apprenticeship programme with the possibility of a permanent position on successful completion of the apprenticeship.

The successful candidate will be in enrolled onto a L2 Retailer Apprenticeship Standard.
Apprenticeship standards are aimed at developing skills within the Apprentices chosen career route, each standard has set knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be successful within the job role. This will include the completion of functional skills in Maths and English. Once the apprentice has completed a minimum of 12 months training and the employer and Babcock regional trainer confirm they have met all the requirements of the standard they will be put through to end point assessment. The end point assessment is independent from the training and includes a variety of assessment methods which test the skills and knowledge of the apprentice to ensure they are fully competent in their role. Each Apprentice will be supported throughout the apprenticeship by a structured programme of teaching, e-learning, one to one training and workplace mentoring; this will encourage and help them to meet the requirements of the new standards and will prepare them for the end of point assessment.
