Job Description

As a new member of a young diverse group of mechanical engineers you will learn how to fault find/repair and maintain construction/rail plant using a combination of first principles diagnostics and experience. You will work towards a Level 3 Land-based Service Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard.

Responsibilities

Role and responsibilities will include:

  • Supervised periodic servicing: scheduled preventative maintenance and servicing of construction/rail plant
  • Supervised pre delivery inspections: check and inspect road rail plant to an industry compliant company standard
  • Inspect documentation to a national rail standard: the inspection of machine related documentation to check its serviceability and compliance with company and industry standards and policies
  • Using a working knowledge of LOLER assess lifting equipment prior to examination

Supervised machinery and attachment repair:

  • With mentored instruction and supervised use of hand tools and equipment, repair road rail equipment and machinery
  • Travel to site as part of a team of two under the supervision of a mentor and with a valid PTS (Personal Track Safety Accreditation) inspect rail plant as part of a current and live maintenance plan
  • Replenish fluid levels as part of a prestart checks regime
  • Engage in an operational training programme for road rail plant: learn to drive 1 Tonne to 45 Tonne road rail plant including dumpers, bulldozers, cranes, and excavators
  • Rotate through all commercial areas of the business to understand plant hire operations, compliance, and transport management
  • Observe question understand and stay safe

Future Prospects

AP Webb Plant Hire is a growing company there are roles within the company the we don’t even know we need yet, as a minimum a hard working fourth year improver apprentice can expect to have his own stocked van, or an equivalent operational apprentice would be required to drive nationwide to site in a smaller van within 3 years.

Reality Check

Conditions:

  • You may work on construction sites and be outdoors in all weathers
  • At other times you might work in a workshop where conditions might be noisy, dirty, and oily
  • You might have to work at heights, for example on cranes
  • You may have to bend, stretch, and lift heavy machinery parts
  • You would be expected to wear a protective helmet, boots and safety glasses and any other PPE when required depending on activity and work area
  • You may have to travel from one site to another to service machines

Off-the-job training must make up at least 20% of the apprentice’s contracted hours, over the total duration of the apprentice’s planned training period.

  • Hardworking and able to work to meet timed deadlines
  • Ability to work as a part of a team of Fitters
  • Practical with good hand skills
  • Accurate, methodical, and systematic

Qualifications Required

GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths, English, and ICT are desirable but not essential.

It is not essential, however if you have completed any relevant prior training such as an engineering or automotive vehicle technician course this will be looked on favourably.

Training Provided

Level 3 Land-based Service Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard, which includes:

  • Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
  • End-Point Assessment (EPA)
  • On the job mentoring and training
  • AP Webb Plant Hire Training Dept to assist / train in completion of RPA rail plant maintenance assessment
  • In-house training
  • Core Health and Safety Training
  • You need to be willing to keep up to date with changes in technology.  You may need to attend specialist training courses provided by manufacturers of machinery
