Job Description

To train and acquire skills and knowledge to become a highly skilled Marine Engineer with an in-depth knowledge of Volvo Penta products, vessel propulsion systems, engine supporting systems and a general understanding of vessel construction.

Responsibilities

All aspects of marine technology are embedded in this dedicated programme with a focus on electronics, diagnostics and computer management systems.

  • Working in a dealership – on the job training in a workshop, gaining hands on experience under the supervision of a trained mentor
  • Two week blocks of residential training at the Volvo Penta training academy covering technology in engines, propulsion systems and the latest diagnostic techniques. Also encompassing service, maintenance installation & repairs

As an Apprentice Marine Engneer you will:

  • Over a 3 to 4 year period, attend college on a residential block release basis as required. 100% ontime college attendance is a key requirement of the apprenticeship role. Whilst at college the Apprentice should strive to be best in class at all times. Submitting work and assignments on time and to the best of their ability
  • When in the workplace the Apprentice will work alongside experienced highly trained marine engineers. During the workplace learning period the Apprentice must take instruction from all engineers and managers and seek to achieve maximum knowledge and learning at every opportunity
  • The Apprentice must record work within the workplace and build a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate they have a thorough understanding and can put into practice what they have learnt
  • The Apprentice must discuss and confide in their mentor, seeking clarification, assistance and advice whenever required
  • During the apprenticeship period the Apprentice will learn and carry out all aspects of marine engineering including routine servicing, fault finding and diagnostics, overhaul, installation, testing and trials. This will include engines, propulsion systems, drive lines, transmissions, control systems, instrumentation and engine supporting systems including fuel, exhaust, cooling and electrical systems
  • The Apprentice must learn and be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles and workings of engines, propulsion system and associated system components and become familiar with Volvo Penta parts catalogues and be able to assist in the selection of spare parts when required
  • The Apprentice must become expert in the use engineering tools, measuring equipment and Volvo Penta Vodia diagnostic tool
  • The Apprentice must learn to read engineering and electrical drawings and interpret them correctly together with workshop and operator manuals
  • Additional learning modules assigned on Volvo Penta Navigator must be completed successfully within the designated time
  • 10. The Apprentice must at all times comply with Company quality procedures.
  • As a representative of the Company the Apprentice will at all times present themselves professionally and provide the highest level of customer service
  • Ensure that boats and customer equipment is left in a clean and tidy fashion, report any damage (fault or non-fault) to their Mentor or Manager immediately
  • Ensure their work area and workshop, service vehicles and mess room are maintained in a clean and tidy fashion
  • Work is mostly carried out along the South Coast, however from time to time it may be necessary to travel further a field and overseas

Health & Safety Responsibilities: Apprentices have a responsibility to:

  • Co-operate with the Health & Safety Officer and Managers on health and safety matters
  • The Apprentice must demonstrate and practice an understanding of Health & Safety applicable to the workplace and the jobs they are undertaking
  • Ensure that all equipment and substances provided are used in a safe manner and in accordance with the training and information given

  • Opportunity of a full time positon as a qualifed Marine Engineer at one of our dealerships

Reality Check

Block release study programme at Volvo Penta Training Academy is required. Apprentices will be studying at Stephenson College, Coaville, Leicestershire. All travel and accommodation are paid for by your dealership.

Based at Stephensons College in Coalville, Leicestershire, the fully equipped workshops allow you to work on the latest Volvo Penta engines, drivelines and propulsion systems with the most up to date equipment and tools.

  • GCSE Grade 4/C in maths, English and Science (are desirable) or the equivalent qualfications
