The advert is for a Catalyst Preparation and Characterisation Apprentice in the Emissions Control Research team in the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre. The purpose of the role is to support the team with routine characterisation/ catalyst preparation activities to produce outputs that meet the group and business unit specifications.

We currently have an exciting new opportunity for a Catalyst Preparation and Characterisation Apprentice to join our Emissions Control Research team in the Johnson Matthey Technology Centre in Sonning Common. Working within our experienced and talented Catalyst Science team, you will be involved in supporting the team with routine characterisation/ catalyst preparation activities to produce outputs that meet the group and business unit specifications. A significant component of this role is the completion of a Level 3 Science Technician apprenticeship which will be funded for you. Through our Apprentice Programmes, we will equip you with the experience, industry recognised accredited qualifications and tools to succeed. You will spend 80% of your time gaining real hands-on experience in the role and 20% dedicated to your Apprenticeship studies, working with a National Training Provider to support your qualification.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the research scientist on catalyst preparation using various methods (incipient wetness impregnation, ion exchange)
  • Prepare samples for testing, ageing and characterisation
  • Perform analysis of the materials using standard characterisation methods (TPR; TPO; TPD; chemisorption; ex-situ UV-VIS; basic FTIR measurements)
  • Support the catalyst ageing/ testing activities
  • Process raw data
  • Analyse straightforward data sets and communicating the results through reports and presentations
  • Comply with all local EHS requirements
  • Maintain and encouraging a high standard of housekeeping in the laboratory areas
  • Carry out any other duties which are within the employee’s skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed

Are you the ideal candidate?

We are looking for:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs, grades C or above, these must include English, Maths, and a science subject
  • An AS or A-Level in science would be an advantage but is not essential
  • Basic lab experience at college or school
  • The ability and enthusiasm to learn and develop both academic and practical skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • The ability to deliver work in a timely manner at the highest quality
  • Ability to demonstrate a professional attitude to work and to colleagues
  • An interest in activities which demonstrate a technical aptitude
  • Accurate record-keeping skills and the ability to follow instructions carefully
